I have a question. Browsing a few different threads, I've come across a few posters that have implied that the popular kids at their school aren't the smart ones and vice versa.

However, at my school, it's nothing like the stereotypical high-school we see on television: one of the smartest kids in our school (a senior who is headed to Columbia U in the fall) is also one of the most popular kids in school.

And that pretty much goes for the rest of my school (it's a large suburban public high-school of 2000+ students in an affluent county). Most of the popular kids are not the ones that don't pay attention in school, do drugs, and party all weekend.

Most of our popular kids are good students who take a lot of Honors/AP classes and do well. This goes for all the grade-levels basically ... one of the most popular 11th grade girls is also possibly the smartest girl in that grade and super-involved in extracurriculars.

To me, it seems the really well-rounded students are the most popular: the ones that play sports/are in ec's, get good grades, and manage to have an active social life. Not the stoners, druggies, or the ones that don't care about their grades.

So, my question is ... does this go for your school as well? Because I was kind of surprised that there are high-schools out there where under-achievers are popular.

I go to a private school, so you’re basically guaranteed a popularity spot if you have a big house and throw great parties.

But other than that, most of the outgoing kids are also both intelligent and athletic. Extra points if you’ve been accepted to a top tier school.

Well.
We do. Not all the popular kids are smart though. And most of them that are smart just don’t try very hard. I mean I’m friends with a bunch of them and I KNOW they’re smart but they don’t really spend much time on hw or studying. They’re content just going to the state school (nothing wrong with going there but they’re just not aiming as high as their potential). Some of them could take 7 AP classes, get As without trying and still have a social life…but they just choose not to :(

^ Where do you live (you don’t have to give the state – just the general area of the country) and what’s your school like (public/private/big/small)?

My school is split down the middle. Half of the popular kids do dip, pot, and aren’t even going to college next year. The rest of us popular kids are smart and care about our grades (we could try harder but we don’t) and we’re all going to great schools next year, ALL the while balancing a great social life.

at my school, 98% of the students go to a 4 year college, so everyone is somewhat smart. but for the super super smart kids its a mix of both. half of them are people who stay in during the weekend and all they do it study, and they try hard to be the smartest. and the others don’t try too hard, are involved in sports and others ec’s, and party on the weekends but manage to get 4 points and amazing test scores

I go to a private school. Everyone is really smart, but we all seem average because
They only have two sections of every AP class, which sucks cause you have to get like A+'s in order to get into them. It leaves no room for screwing up, like I did freshman year. Thus, colleges think you aren’t “challenging” yourself since you only have like 5 AP’s on your schedule.
We have this crazy girl that has her own non-profit organization and got into all the colleges she applied to. She also gets every scholarship and basically makes our school look really good. So the teachers worship her.

So basically all the popular kids ARE smart. Everyone at my school is smart. We don’t get into good schools cause of the system my school has with AP’s and honors classes. So we look like we don’t challenge ourselves, etc.

At my school the popular kids are smart but they usually aren’t super smart. They make the honor roll, they all go to good colleges (everyone goes to college, basically. Last year one girl didn’t because she joined a ballet company, but that was it). They’re not the smartest kids but a good number of them are probably in the top 10%, most of them have A averages. One of the most popular kids is going to UPenn next year.

I don’t think my school has “popular” kids – or perhaps I’m so unpopular, that I wouldn’t even know who the popular kids would be.

There are a few people known far and wide across campus, I think, but most everybody knows everybody else so it’s not too huge an accomplishment. Their intelligence levels vary across the board, though.

They’re certainly not looked up to, in any sense, however.

Most of ours are really stupid but there’s a few of us who are decently smart… like smart but still no better than state schools. The rest are dumb and okay athletes but are all on the same sports team so they just look out for eachother and whatever. It’s entirely possible for someone to be really popular and really smart; some people are just smart enough to not have to work for it and still be really smart… or they’re just smart enough to take advantage of the ■■■■■■■■ popular kids and they can get what they want. That’s where you want to be :P
