What are the popular majors/academic concentrations? What can be said to be UNC's focuses? Are any majors impacted?
Thank you!

According to the UNC Admissions 2011 Quick Facts…

Among our more than 70 majors, the most popular are:

• Biology (1,901)
• Psychology (1,700)
• Business Administration (1,349)
• Journalism and Mass Communication (1,049)
• Political Science (965)
• Exercise and Sport Science (910)
• Economics (863)
• Communication Studies (776)
• International Studies (681)
• Chemistry (654)
• English (646)
• History (631)
• Nursing (553)

What specifically are you asking when you say “impacted”?

As far as I’m aware, none of the majors in the College of Arts and Sciences are impacted (i.e., there is no competitive admissions process following admission to the college). Further, applying for a less popular major probably wouldn’t be helpful.

Majors in the other schools (Public Health, Business, Nursing, Journalism, etc.) are by competitive admission.

Thank you both for your insight! I’m really glad to see that UNC is strong across the academic spectrums (I was initially afraid their biology/medical programs would overshadow everything else), and that they avoid the impaction problem many public schools have!

@aigiqinf Do you know if this is true for transfer students also?

No idea–sorry.
