Popular Non-US-Universities?

Hey,

I am an international student from Germany, and I am curious how names like Heidelberg or FU Berlin are known to the average American college student. Our universities always claim to have the most renowned faculties, but I don't know how much of this reaches the American continent.
Here in Germany, only the big names of HYPSM are known from tv, top universities like Brown or UChicago are practically unknown here. I now wonder which universities the typical American would recall? Only Oxford/Cambridge?
I specifically want to ask Americans, international students, I assume, may have a complete different image.

I would say Oxbridge, Cambridge and maybe McGill are the most known

I’ve just heard of Oxford and Cambridge. Not much attention is paid to non-US universities here

I assume you mean Oxford and Cambridge, and in that case I agree.

The only reason we’ve heard of Oxford and Cambridge over here is because we speak English. We don’t really hear about foreign universities over here (MAYBE you hear about Canadian ones, if you’re lucky), and I can honestly say I have not met a single person who wanted to go to one.

Asians =
Korean institute of applied science and technology (or something, forgive i’m not korean =P )
National Taiwan University
HKUST
IIT
Beijing University

In the sense that Americans students apply and attend, then:

Certainly Oxford and Cambridge
McGill (Canada)
St. Andrews (Scotland)
Trinity (Ireland)

Typical Americans wouldn’t know about these schools.

Asian:

Tsinghua U
Hong Kong U
Beijing U
IIT

and I’ve only heard of Oxford and Cambridge.

As for Canadian ones… I’m Canadian, so I know quite a lot of them.

Hm… there are only a few international universities that I can think of off the top of my head:
UK: Oxford, Cambridge, Glasgow, Edinburgh
Canada: McGill, UBC
Utrecht
Ecole Normale Superieure
University of Tokyo

I’ve never heard of the schools the OP listed.

La SORBONNE!!! :D

Oxford
Cambridge
McGill
University of Tokyo
University of Toronto
Harbin Institute of Technology
Xinhua University
IIT

Hm… that might be it…

^ The Sorbonne sort of doesn’t exist anymore. It’s a bunch of different schools in the University of Paris now. This was a huge disappointment to me when I tried to find a Sorbonne shirt to update the one I frequently wear which my parents bought back when they were newlyweds.

I’d say
Oxbridge (which is Oxford and Cambridge. But Oxford sucks)
Tsinghua
IIT
McGill
Toronto
LSE

looks like Oxford und Cambridge are the only universities that the average American know… shows me how much German universities are behind their expectations … or just how awesome the American ones are :)

Yeah, the Sorbonne is 13 Universities of the University of Paris system- only 4 actually use the name.

But I have heard of

University of Paris
University of Copenhagen
All the schools in the University of London
Imperial School
Oxford
Cambridge
McGill
Toronto
Glasgow
Edinburgh
Loughborough (I prolly butchered the spelling)
Trinity
St. Andrews
Warwick

imperial college, uwaterloo, utoronto, ubc, mcgill, kings college, edinburgh, nus singapore

Typical Americans don’t know much about the world.

Oxbridge, LSE, University College London, Kings College, Edinburgh, Trinity, Moscow State (cuz my mom is Russian), IIT, McGill, Toronto. Until this thread I thought the Sorbonne still existed and the best German university was in Munich.

This thread reflects on Americans and their inward/insular focus, rather than the stature and quality of international universities.

Most of my friends know of Oxford and St. Andrew’s(this school is popular with rich American kids). Some know of Cambridge, the Sorbonne, McGill and UToronto. That’s about it.

Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, IIT, Tokyo, Toronto, McGill, Technion, University of Paris system, Monash, etc.

I know a bunch more from the UK. I tend to know the English language U’s because I’ve read papers from faculty there more frequently and have had friends study abroad in various places there, etc. I also know all of the Israeli universities because I have a lot of family there, though I only listed HaTechnion.
