Popularity of Rice

It seems to me that I'm the only one in California who knows what Rice is and where it is. When I am asked about college admissions/ acceptances, I usually get the reply, "What's Rice?." Everyone knows Harvard, Stanford, and Yale. But no one knows what Rice is. Is this true for anybody else or is it just for Californians? Also, for Texans, is it true that Rice is the "Harvard" in Texas?

Hey I'm from California too.. and although I agree that most people haven't even heard of Rice, the majority of students in my ap classes have all heard of Rice, and so has my counselor.

rice is big name down here in houston....

Oh, it's way more fun to say that you go to rice when you are in texas than when you are in NY. Yes, it's disheartening when you say that you applied early to rice and so you never knew if you got into stanford and people look at you like you are completely insane...but i digress.

More Rice-Stanford CWS championship game would help :)

rice is huge in tx, esp in greater houston. right next to duke.

Rice is the Ivy of the South.

i love Rice, but Duke is the Ivy of the South.

It depends on how you define "South"; can anything be more South than Texas? If anything, Duke is the Ivy of the MidEast U.S.

duke isn't in the "deep" south.

hey i am going to duke! just thought id share that! lol

Duke can be the Ivy of whatever area it represents, just not the South:-P.

I live in Houston and I go to a feeder school that sent 12 last year. Rice is HUGE down here. 25% of the Rice student body is from H-town.

Duskstamper, which school do you go too?

People around here (New Orleans area) view Rice as prestigious and somewhat mysterious, as so few are accepted......My S applied ID but sees it as a reach, and he just wants to see what happens....he's never visited Rice but knows a couple of the students and likes what he read/found out about it at his interview. He is not counting heavily on admission but just wants to see what happens.

Smazn: You are not asking the right people. Ask a few profs at Stanford, Cal Tech or any of the top med schools.

My daughter graduated from Duke. Son chose Rice. Both are great, but I'd give a slight edge to Rice for overall quality of undergraduate education, particularly in the sciences. The residential college system at Rice is similar to those at Yale and Cambridge and is outstanding.

smazn,
I completely agree with you about Rice's reputation in California. I'm from there too and when I tell people that I applied ID, they're like "Where's that? Texas? Eww." People in California, to me, seem ignorant how amazing Rice is. The only person I know that has heard of it is my counselor. Other than that, my fellow classmates are clueless as to what a top-notch school it is. I wonder if there's a particular reason for that. Anyone have any ideas?

A particular reason? Haha... umm.. distance? California is, after all, kind of far from Houston.
