Porter Scholars?

Hey everyone! I was called by an admissions officer earlier today who told me that I had received both admission to Skidmore as well as the Porter Scholarship. YAY, SKIDMORE!

Are there any current students at Skidmore who were also awarded the same scholarship? If so, how has it enhanced your college experience? Is your mentor helpful?

Also, are there any other applicants who received the same scholarship? I'd love to get to know anyone who did! :)

Best of luck to everyone else!

im so jealous! i hope i receive a similar call, but i doubt it :P

I have received a similar call two days ago saying that I’ve been chosen as a Porter scholar and I am as curious as Dramacratic to learn the benefits of this scholarship.

Also, does anybody know that whether this could be used for adding on top of the need based aid that the college says will not meet the full need of international students on their website?

Good luck to everybody with all admission process.

Congrats Tongamunga!! :)

Well, the admissions officer who I spoke to told me that financial aid is a separate issue, but I’m sure we’d be able to use the scholarship as leverage to getting more from the FA office. Do you know if we get admitted to the Honors Forum, too? It says online that we’re “automatically considered” for it, but when do we find out?

Good luck, caterpillar, and to everyone else as well!

Well thanks, and congrats to you too :)

Actually before you mentioned this I thought that consideration as a direct admittance to Honors Forum, I guess I am deluded by the word “automatically”. I think we will find it out when the packet comes, detailed information should be there.

That’s what my mom keeps telling me, too! I guess I just don’t want to get my hopes up, haha. I might just call admissions to find out, actually…I’ll keep you updated!

I got my Porter acceptance letter (the official admissions acceptance will be mailed out on March 26) today, but ti made no mention of the Honors Forum. Hmmm. =</p>

Is Skidmore one of your top choices?

Really,
I am a boarder and will not have the chance to see the letter that is sent to my home for a couple more days actually. Since I am an international applicant the letter did not reach my adress yet :frowning: However, the admission office I spoke said that was going to be the full admission letter included in the envelope including the decision to financial aid.

Honestly speaking, it is not one of my top ones, but I am perfectly ok with going. What about you?

Aww, that stinks! It’ll be worthwhile, though - the letter is actually quite nice!

It isn’t one of my top choices either, but I wound up getting a near full ride, so it’s definitely creeping its way to the top of my ladder. To be honest, the more I look at the school, the more I like it, despite the fact that I have yet to hear from the higher-ranked schools that I applied to. Where else are you seriously considering?

Yeah, this scholarship definitely makes Skidmore climb up. And it is actually a really nice campus architecture and offers good education. Since I am also interested in art pretty much -even though I am a science student- I also like its art background.

Some of my others are Swarthmore, Duke, U Penn and Northwestern. What about your choices?

So, I just called, and all Porter Scholars are in the Honors Forum! I’m going to be visiting on the 29th (this month), and if I like the school, I’ll definitely be matriculating. That type of exposure plus graduating nearly debt-free is just way too good a deal to pass up.

Ahhh, I love art. I’m more of an art appreciator than anything else, though (unless you consider amazing stick figures “art”). They have an excellent English/Writing program, too, which is what I might major in along with Biology, so I’m nearly sold.

My other top choices are Wesleyan, Vassar, Brown and UPenn. It all depends on the financial aid, though, really.

You should join the Skidmore Class of 2014 group! There are three other Porter Scholars on there! :)

Honors forum, yes!! That is really nice. In a way, they are taking us as top students from the beginining  The scholarship is definitely a great opportunity. But, I guess I won’t be able to visit the campus until the beginning of next year even if I decide to matriculate (Istanbul is too far from Skidmore  . So, may I ask you a favor? I’ll really appreciate if you can share your observations with me after your visit to Skidmore.

I heard it has a great campus in a safe and nice location from my art teacher (whose former girlfriend was at Skidmore and he visited there very often) and the photos at the website seem to support what he says. Anyway, I’ll be waiting for your remarks. Hope to be together next year at Skidmore…

Istanbul? Wow, that would be quite a lengthy stroll across the pond (or several ponds, really) to get to Skidmore. Pretty much. There’s something to be said about a school that has THAT much confidence in you that they’re essentially rolling out the red carpet for you. And not only do you get the perks of the Honors Forum, but you join this elite group of students (FIVE each year, so a total of 20) that gets so much leverage during the course of our undergraduate experience (our own science/math mentor on TOP of having academic advisors!). Compare that to a school that doesn’t really give much notoriety aside from the school’s brand name, and I think it’s pretty clear which could/will benefit you more in the end.

I will DEFINITELY let you know about it! In fact, I’ll bring a camera along and take pictures of everything for you, too, and send them via e-mail, if you’d like. I’ve heard that Saratoga Springs is the quintessential college town, so it’ll be really cool to see if it turns out to be as it’s been described to me. :)

hey! i’m also a porter scholar- and i just got my honors forum invite in the mail. i’m still not sure about what that does exactly- are there honors housing options involved?

There are, if you choose to visit those options. I think Honors kids get the top two floors of Wait hall, and possibly the top two floors in another dorm. In any case, Wait is one of the best dorms on campus, next to the apartments! Definitely consult with admissions about the honors housing options, though, as I could be completely wrong.

Congrats!! :D
