Portfolio Day approvals

My daughter received a letter from MICA telling her that her portfolio had been accepted and that she was in the running for a competitive scholarship. We are trying to find out (and yes will contact the school) if this means that she is accepted pending transcripts and so forth, and whether or not she has to submit her portfolio again? Similar letter from SAIC -- portfolio "approved for admission" and nominated for merit scholarship.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks.

Forgot to say: Both notifications were the result of NPD reviews. SAIC approved on the spot and followed up with a letter. MICA was very enthusiastic and the letter followed.

My D received the same letter last year after NPD and was accepted. I think it more or less does mean what your thinking. In fact, everyone I know that received that letter did get acccepted. I don't know if they all received scholarship. My D did not fill out the supplmental scholarship forms because she was already accepted to other schools she was more interested in. MICA did offer her a stipend, but I think it may have been more if she applied for some of the other scholarships that were available.

Thanks -- We called MICA and found out that you do still have to submit the portfolio, but are in a very good position to be admitted. I think the letter is a bit misleading, though.

I know I've seen your posts, but I don't remember where your daughter ended up going!

Heron, please check with SAIC, but I believe you still need to submit the portfolio digitally or on slides to be considered for scholarships.

AdvMom, this is my understanding, as well. SAIC letter is clearer than MICA's. But I'm definitely going to call!

Massart. She fell in love with Boston, and also had got some great references about the quality of the school from professionals in the field (who hire art graduates ans see lots of portfolios) and also in art education at the college level (people who teach in other art schools and are familiar with some Massart faculty, particularly GD). She heard good things about MICA as well. She didn't apply to any NYC school because she wanted a change (we live in the city), but still wanted to be in a biggish city commutable by bus or train.

I got my portfolio accepted by SAIC's admissions staff via interview, and the advisor told me that I was pretty much guaranteed to get in... unless your daughter's grades/scores don't meet requirements I don't see how she couldn't get in. I also got the same letter from MICA. I was told by both schools I would not need to send in any portfolio for acceptance, but I am going to anyway for scholarship consideration...

Hmm. That's interesting. I wonder if the person she emailed got the regular consideration mixed up with the scholarship consideration. I'm going to double check this. The letter was "your portfolio has been accepted." I don't know how that translates into "submit it again."

BTW, what are your impressions of SAIC? Have you visited?

My D is currently a soph at MICA.

Portfolio "acceptance" means that aspect of the application process is complete. If they recommend that you apply for scholarships, it is highly likely you will be accepted.

The merit scholarships are based on portfolio, academic standing, and essay questions that are part of the scholarship application process. To be considered for scholarships you will need to submit work either electronically or via slides, I forget which.

MICA is very generous with merit based scholarship for talented prospective students. I know of at least one student who chose MICA over Cooper Union, which offers free tuition.

Feel free to PM me with questions.

SAIC: portfolio definitely accepted for admission. For the merit scholarship need to submit a portfolio.
