SMFA is School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (say that three times fast) which is associated with Tufts, although the art school is directly across from the museum in a way cool part of Boston. AIB is Art Institute of Boston, which is associated with Lesley University, again with the art school some distance from the main campus, but they shuttle you back and forth as needed. They were just nice, nice people.

Tufts and SMFA have a dual-degree program whereby students accepted by both schools can earn both a BFA from the SMFA as well as a BA/BS from Tufts. Look into that, if your D has good stats as Tufts is highly selective.

Interesting information about the portfolio pieces. My daughter also has mostly all figure drawing pieces from a summer pre-college program but some are conte crayon, some are oil paintings, some still lifes in acrylic and a print from her print making class. She is planning on adding self portraits but doesn't have any sculptures, etc. She is thinking about interior design. Does she need more variety or is mostly figure drawings okay?

believersmom, check with the schools to see if a portfolio is even required for a photography major. My DD goes to RIT and I don't think they require one for photo majors (but does require one for art or design majors). If a standard art portfolio is not required, I would think it would help to have photo pieces (but not necessarily the fine art pieces).

I found this thread really helpful and wanted to say thanks to those of you who shared information about portfolios.

jerzgrlmom-
That is certainly interesting, will definitely check that out.

scoop, I did too. I think there are a slew of NPDs coming up; maybe we should all plan to share what we learn (i.e, be nosey for the greater good).

S2 is sending a portfolio with his applications. What is the best way to send interactive animated work? A CD? A CD plus stills? Will the adcom load it?

What is the best way to send web design? Will the web address do? Would the adcom bother to check it? Or, should he load that onto a CD as well (I have no idea if this is possible but I assume it is?).

Also, what is the best way to present a portfolio made up of graphic and animated work? Put the CDs on top?

Any interactive or time-based media is usually put on a CD accompanying the slide or print portfolio. Make sure that it can be read by a Mac or a PC. Some schools even ask for a backup copy, in case the first didn't burn right or their machine kills it. It would be nice to include some stills in the slides or book too, because there isn't any guarantee of the school actually popping that cd in and looking at it. The great thing about slides and the reason so many still request them, is that the adcom can all sit in a lecture hall and flip through the slides and talk about them all at once instead of passing things around. That's a little harder with a computer screen.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for him to call the schools he's most interested in and ask how they would prefer to view that stuff, or ask about it at a NPD. My advice is just based on the requirements of schools I've seen who do accept cds.

Does anyone know how to get a list of the schools that will be represented at a specific NPD? I tried calling the host school who had no information and the NPD website doesn't seem to have a list of attendees at each location.

Mom of Alex, go to:

http://www.npda.org/

and, http://www.npda.org/colleges.html

These should answer your questions.

That's a tough one. The NPD site lists all the colleges but they weren't at the portfolio day we went to here in Denver. Ie, RISD wasn't there at all. I had checked the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design's webpage and they however, did have a listing of all the colleges that would be at the portfolio day. Good luck!

Yes, I've already been to the NPDA website but they only list all of the schools nationwide that participate. There are specific dates and locations for host sites but nowhere do they list which schools will attend at a particular site. For example, my daughter is interested in attending NPD at Drexel on November 12. The site does not list which schools will be in attendance with representatives, just locations and dates. No one at Drexel was able to help me either and they do not have a link on their website.

D got a poster/promo piece from MIAD that shows which schools will be there, but neither MIAD's site or the main NPD site shows by location. Anyone interested in MIAD's attending schools, let me know and I can post them here.

Here is a link to the participants and other info on the NPD at MIAD:
