Portfolio?

I remember my 8th grade teacher used to urge her students to save their English essays in order to compile a portfolio for college admission. Do colleges ask for students to compile portfolios of their school works? I thought portfolios are only required for art schools? Because I have never heard of anyone compiling a portfolio for college admission, at least not for public colleges.

Not that I know of, but on occasion a school might allow you to send in supplemental works, such as essays. I can't imagine that anything written in eighth grade would have much weight, but it's certainly something you might be able to build on or draw from for those application essays!

I also know of kids bringing different types of portfolios to interviews. I bring clippings from some of my journalism experience; my friend brought some of her awards.

Yeah -- a handful of schools ask to see graded papers and what not. Too bad I burned all of mine.... Luckily my school of choice didn't ask for any.

Emerson wants one of those for the honors program.

It appears that this sort of thing just happens in specific situations, for the most part.

There are more and more schools that are SAT optional. That means that you don't have to send standardized test scores, if you either have not/will not take them, or if they were lower than you would like. Many students do much better in school than their test scores would indicate, and so this seems to be a good development for a lot of kids. Often when a school is scores optional, they require a graded essay to be submitted with the application. They want to see a sample of your writing and the way the teacher graded it. As I recall, Middlebury is one such school. I know there are others in all different levels of selectivity.

We just sent in two applications that requested a graded analytical paper. Lucky my D has never cleaned under her bed in the last year, we found the graded paper with comments and an A+ grade.
