Portsmouth Abbey School

I need information! Please. PAS or Deerfield?

PAS is one of the only schools I encountered that offers merit based scholarships. If your SSATs are above 80% you could find some meaningful savings. My inference is that this is being done to improve the academic strength of the student body.The school has something of a classical orientation. PAS is also a Catholic school and there is a monastery onsite. We chose not to apply, but did like the school. We are applying to Deerfield, which we very much liked. Deerfield is much more competitive for admissions, has a lovely colonial period campus, and a really well balanced academic program.

Have never visited Deerfield but I do know a little about Portsmouth Abbey. Beautiful 550 acre campus sweeps down to Narragansett Bay. The percentage of day students (30%) is much higher than it is at many boarding schools. It seemed to have a warm and supportive environment. However, it is more classical in its orientation than some places and if you don’t want to study some religion and/or ethics, it may not be the place for you. Have the impression, though, that non-catholics are not made to feel like outsiders.

I applied to Portsmouth Abbey School last year and was a top finalist for the Diman Scholarship. Portsmouth is a great school and the admissions office is really warm and welcoming, however, IMO Deerfield is the better school.

PS. I’m so glad there’s a thread for PAS on here :D

I’m applying to PAS this winter, for Grade 9 next fall. If anyone had any admission hints or tips, and I was wondering if PAS offered another way to interview if you couldn’t make it out to the campus.

Thank you (:

@eastcoast21,
I know kids who got into Portsmouth Abbey. It’s not that hard to get in. If you get an SSAT in the 80’s, you have a great chance of getting in.

This thread was very old. I thought I would see if anyone out there has any updated information on reputation, admissions process, school life, etc. for Portsmouth Abbey that was newer than 2010.

Any more recent admission insight? thank you!!
