Positives and Negatives of Cal

Since I already wrote an advice post, I figured I’d start one where everyone (already admitted or has friends/family that went to Cal) shares one positive and one negative thing that happened to them at Cal. Remember, this is for $%!Ts and Giggles, not to scare people off. Keep it lite and funny.

When I went to Cal Day with some friends, I was amused at how much Stanford bashing went on at the school. I would consider that a positive because it made the day very interesting. The school guide would talk about how Berkeley is better than Stanford in this, or Stanford in that. The "my library is bigger than your library," and "my tower is bigger than your tower" rhetoric was quite amusing.

The negatives were that there were soooooo many ugly girls at Berkeley. As an asian-american myself, I am partial towards Asian girls and I never saw so many ugly ones at the same time before. I was thinking that has to be AT LEAST one cute one but alas there was none.

Another positive is that Berkeley has really cool looking buildings. Sather Gate and the Tower were pretty nice. The libraries are pretty awesome, and the people are generally friendly. But damn, the girls are awful.

The girls are that bad? How is it possible that a school can act as an ugly magnet?

UCLA is starting to look ever more attractive.

As a current Cal student I can tell you the girls really aren't bad. They're just normal looking. I came expecting the rumors to have some truth to them, but it's a joke, people here look like college people anywhere else (only more asians). And I grew up around frickin UCSB, where everyone and her sister could be in playboy if they wanted to.

I'm sure rooster's a real ladies man. I'm sure none of the girls in Berkeley can possibly stand up to his beauty standards. I'm sure he's a very handsome man. That said, he seems to spend a lot of time thinking about Cal, writing about Cal, and even going to Cal day! He's obsessed. As for me, maybe my standards are bit lower than the rooster's, but I've seen some pretty damn good looking girls up on campus. I'm not asian, but I too love asian woman, and I can tell you that there is not a shortage of hot asian chicks. A piece of advice: go down to the farm and check out their girls, then come to Cal and take a look around. You'll see what's up.

Well, as for a positive; my fraternity has a member that just won "Mr. Casanova" for 2005. We had a racous personal party and a great time celebrating our collective and the personal victory of our brother, and we would like to say to the ladies of Kappa Alpha Theta: THANK YOU FOR PUTTING ON A GREAT EVENT! WE LOVE YOU!

A negative? I got turned down for a date last week, that's it.

At least Rooster has his priorities right:

What matters is girls and how cool the buildings look. Academics be damned.

Anyways, one positive thing, among many since I've come to Cal:
Playing in the Berkeley Symphony: faculty, undergrads, grad students, all come together to play beautiful music. Not that standard fare (Rhapsody in Blue, The Planets, etc.) everyone and their mother plays in high school...we bust out Lutoslawski and Bernstein and all that good stuff.

Oh, and I absolutely have to add: post-midnight TopDog/WestCoastPizza feeding frenzies. [insert Duff Man "Oh yeah!" here]

And a negative? Hmmm...
NOT ENOUGH LEFT-HANDED DESKS! Top-notch research institution, fine, but how can a hard-working guy like me keep focused in a 90-minute lecture if taking notes becomes a physical pain after 10 minutes? Oh, and losing to U$C in football sort of sucked too.

Well, I have a friend who's a freshmen at Cal now, and for him, it basically came down to Cal or UCLA, or, as he puts it, "hippies or yuppies." It was a easy decision for him.

good: the beautiful campus with it's lush green hills and a natural atmosphere

bad: those hills don't look so good at 9 in the morning

The reason for the percieved ugliness? Cal students are overworked. UCLA students have enough time for makeup and all the other "girl" stuff.

Pro: Awesome professors, beautiful campus, and the guy who plays guitar in front of Dwinelle rocks.
Con: Some professors can't speak english. Anybody who has had Ratner for Math 1B can agree to this. I agree about the hills, but I got used to it after the first week.

Pro: Some of best programs in the country
Con: Kinda big in size, maybe a tad bit impersonal

She is so much better than Borcherds was for Math 1A. I can understand her perfectly; and besides, her mannerisms are so quirky.

Pros: Beautiful campus, lots of energy, amazing teachers (for the most part), school pride (Go Bears!), no shortage of things to do.

Cons:Walking up and down Telegraph too much, crazy homeless people, grading could be a tiny bit easier, little kids on campus constantly asking if I'll pay for their basketball uniforms, the complex math problem that is Dwinelle Hall.

"UCLA is starting to look ever more attractive."

This is a false rumor. Whoever started this kind of rumor that swayed me away from Berkeley to UCLA, die!!! This is not true at all.

Really. What don't you like about UCLA?
