Possibilites of getting internships with zero work experience?

So currently, I’m a a sophomore at St. John’s University pursing a degree in accounting. Up to this date, I have not had any work experience, like ever, except for maybe a law internship back in high school which lasted for 2 weeks. There is a career fair coming up soon and I am considering on attending it. I don’t know if it would be a great idea since I have really nothing to put on my resume. My current gpa is 3.75 and I’m just spending most of my days at school just studying. My main problem is that I’m very shy so building connections for me is very difficult. Would joining clubs or doing community service help polish my resume or do I not have a chance of getting an internship? Thank you!

You have great grades in a high demand major - that’s who the recruiters are looking for! Most accounting firms don’t take interns until the summer after junior year, so consider this an opportunity to introduce yourself and then touch base with them a couple times during the school year to let them know you would be interested in pursuing an internship. Don’t worry - everyone feels a little awkward at these career fairs

Thanks for your response! I was worried that recruiters might take one’s work experience over one’s gpa. This loosened me up. I hope to attend these fairs and try to build connections with them. Again, thank you!

What did you do last summer?

In all honesty, my summer was dead like most of the previous ones. However, I did travel outside of the country for a month. Besides that, I just stayed home.

Having an “internship” type of experience becomes more urgent between junior & senior year.

As a sophomore, what’s wrong with simply getting a regular-ole, humble, part-time or summer job? Why does it have to be an “internship”?

Last summer, one of my kids bussed tables in a restaurant, and the other kid worked a construction job. Both jobs were humble, dirty, and totally unrelated to their ultimate career goals. As an upper income parent, I could have just given them spending money, but the experience was good for them and they’re building a resume.

If you can’t land an “internship”, then just get a job-- ANY JOB. Fritterering away your summer just sitting on your butt looks really bad.
