I've had a lot of trouble with my English II Honors teacher (she's a complete b*tch). Anyway, I'm most probably going to get a B+ in the subject for my final grade (appears on transcript) as a result. I've heard that if you get a B-range grade that you can count out acceptance into schools like HYP, etc. All of my other grades this year are either A's or A+'s, I have really strong EC's, and the like. Somebody tell me realistically, will this grade seriously affect my chances of admission negatively? I have been sinking into the most massive depression because I feel like my chances are shot, and I was wondering whether my feelings are justified.

College acceptance is very different from Ivy acceptance. Standards are all over the board and it is extremely individualized. Even with rigorous standards, acceptance to top colleges is not impossible with a B.

I would suggest taking a second look at some of the people who have told you these things.

It's not just that people have told me so. The only students from my school who have been accepted to top schools have nearly perfect transcripts. I really can't think of anyone with a lower grade to be accepted into top colleges. I'm not sure if this is always the case, and I just want a realistic perspective on whether students have gotten into top schools with somewhat mediocre transcripts.

Seriously, you should know that grades are not the most important thing for admission into top colleges. So what if a person messed up once or wasn't lucky?

As I am not a college admissions counselor, I can't really speak with any sort of expertise on the admissions thought of top institutions. Common sense tells me that a combination of academic rigor, passion for learning, and the like are used in making decisions.

However, I will say that a single "B" is not mediocre. Frankly, the term mediocre applies to mostly C students, in my humble opinion.

I've removed several posts that were rude.
Instead of using hyperbole, sarcasm or insults, far better to straightforwardly politely give your opinion.

I know it can be really frustrating if this is your first time getting a B (I'm in the same position with Calc-- post freakout, now working on acceptance), but I wouldn't worry about it too much. You're a sophomore, right? You still have two more years to show an "upward grade trend", and I think ECs might actually be more important if your grades and test scores are above a certain threshold.

Uh, my rank wasn't spectacular due to a C and a couple of B's and I got into great schools like Berkeley and, amazingly, Stanford. Don't even bother saying a B+ is mediocre.

To be frank, get over it. A B is a B. You got it. Nothing you can do about it. You'll still get into college. You'll still live a good life. The world will still turn. You'll go to college and no college will turn you down for a B.

I hope this is a paradoythread, because if OP is "sinking into the most massive depression" over a B, I really wouldn't want to know how they handle important issues.
