Hi, I'm a junior and I'd like to think that I have great activties, community service, etc, but I don't think my "Honors" section on the common app will be up to par. I was wondering if you guys knew any awards I could try to win (outside of my school) to help beef up my application. I'm not interested in law or premed, pre-anything, so I was wondering what you guys know about.

I really do need help. :)

I’m looking for the exact same thing! Anyone?

I’m looking for the same thing myself. Hope we can all find something. :D

You know, trying to win awards simply to beef up your application/resume is pretty shallow. Do you have something you’re good at? Something you enjoy doing? Go out and make a difference in that area. It doesn’t have to be an award. I could make up an national award and give it to my friends, it’s just useless. And awards with any real weight take a lot of effort, determination, passion, and skill to win; they’re not things you just say, “Oh, I guess I’ll try for this award today.”

In short, if you have a strength, you should be able to be involved in competitions that give out awards anyways. If not, you’re not gonna win any meaningful awards anyways.

Maybe my diction was misleading. I am not shallow. the activities that I’m passionate for don’t really give out honors, so I don’t want it to look like on my application that I didn’t impact those activities/interests that I’m in. I was just simply interested some awards I could compete for. dear lord.

So, what are your interests? Strengths? Can’t exactly suggest any specific things to aim for without some info.

I’ll put it this way. If you’re applying to Wharton (a business school), getting an award in piano won’t exactly help you (unless it was extremely prestigious like nation-wide). Specifics are definitely needed.

I see what you mean! Sorry, well my interests include diversity, reading, English, Psychology, and Sociology etc.

if you’re really good at something, ask someone you trust about any awards/scholarships.

that sounds like a good idea. ill try that.
