Possible Cal Poly Rescinding?

Hi, I am currently a senior in high school who has been accepted to Cal Poly as a political science major. However, there has been a change in my senior year course schedule, I dropped AP Calculus AB and replaced it with an A-G Political Science course for my second semester. I had a 3.8 GPA last semester and will probably have something similiar this current semester. I am worried that my acceptance will be rescinded. I emailed Cal Poly and they were fairly vague. They responded with the following:

"You reported 10 semesters of mathematics on your application.

You were selected to Cal Poly SLO based on having those 10 semesters of math.

If you drop to 9 semesters it may or may not negatively impact your admission offer.

What we will need to do is remove the 10th semester of Math from your application to see if you would have been selected without it. This could possibly result in your space being rescinded.

If you accept our offer please provide an official transcript from your high school immediately for review."

So, my only question is: How likely is it that Cal Poly will rescind my acceptance? Cal Poly is one of my top schools, however, I am worried that I will commit and then they will rescind my acceptance when they receive my final transcripts and I will not be able to attend another college. Thanks.

That depends on your applied for major and MCA. They’re saying they’ll recalculate your MCA taking off the 125 points you would have gotten by taking more that extra semester of math.

Their admissions process is based solely on the MCA. If the drop in your score goes below the lowest person that was offered admissions, your admission will be rescinded.

Calculate your NEW score without the 10th semester of math and let us know what it is.

Only use your 9-11 grades for the GPA.

Rule of thumb is never drop a class without checking with the schools you have applied. You have now found out why this is important since the school(s) will accept you based on your self-report classes/grades. That is why all schools give out provisional acceptances and leave the option open for rescinding based on your final transcript. Hopefully your 1 less semester of Math will be OK. If possible, I would accept the SLO offer if this is your top choice, send the transcript now showing the dropped class and then if rescinded, you still have until May 1 to accept another school’s offer.

@Gumbymom yeah that makes sense. I did check with San Diego State before I dropped the class because they were my top option and they said it was okay. However, it looks like i didn’t get into SDSU but I did get into CP, oh well. I figured that if I got into CP, I would probably get into SDSU but i guess not.

SDSU has not finished sending out acceptances. Until you get waitlisted or rejected, there is still a chance so do not give up hope just yet. Many majors still have not heard and they will continue into March.

@Gumbymom thanks for the help!

@HCJest Quick question:What email address did you use? My son got accepted, history major and he is thinking of dropping his calculus class this semester. Thanks

@mtt2017 i think “admissions@calpoly.edu

so CP requested my partial transcripts so that should settle it right. like i sent my partial transcripts with my current courses without calc so they’ll probably review my application again and determine whether it will be rescinded or not

Good luck. Let us know what happens.

A similar situation happened with my son. He dropped Calc his second semester. He called and spoke with an admissions rep. Fortunately for him he had 10 credits of Math already and from what I understand, 10 gets you to the max amount of points for your MCA score and therefore it wouldn’t have affected his admission decision. His Fall calc class got him 11 so he didn’t need the extra credit and he’s a Psychology major- no real need for calc. They did say to send recent transcript, which he will do along with a statement/copy of e-mail conversation with admin. Also, FYI contrary to other posts, they DID accept his AP Stats class for math.

@HCJest What happened? Have you heard back?

Update: I did not get rescinded!

@HCJest: Great News!!
