I currently go to University of Houston (1st year) The year is goin' great and i predict my GPA to be a 4.0 or a 3.9 at the least. I'll have around 32-35 hours at the end of my first year. Plently of extra-curricular activities; manager of a store, manager of computer resources, head counselor for a camp in '05 and '06, member of MSA, VP of a youth club, high school basketball, cross country, and track. Only thing holding me back is my high school record (not good) 1030/1600 SAT (530 in math, 500 in CR) 3.2/4.0 GPA, and top 34%. Haven't taken any subject tests or APs (on website it says transfer students not required to submit results of subject tests) Although my college record is great, high school record is bad, but having more than 30 hours, will they still focus on my high school record alot? Let me know if it is worth applying and if I have any chance at all to transfer?

i haven't heard of this from a reputable source, but the consensus on CC is that they look at your high school record and SATs much more for sophomore transfers (your case) than for junior transfers. following that reasoning it looks like you would have a great chance if you can keep it up until next year, since all you really have to show them is 1 semester vs 8 high school semesters. you might as well apply i don't think it is a big commitment, but i would mentally focus on next year.

I also go the the U of H, a freshmen and considering transferring to Rice. I have all A's with just finals left and figure I'll finish with a 4.0 or close to it. This semester Bio, Calc, Eng, Hist. Next semester, Bio, Calc, Eng, Ethics. For the year 28 credits. My SAT I, 2360. I'll have good rec's from Calc and English. I have decent EC's. My biggest challenge if one considers it so, I only went to HS two years and now college instead. HS credits A's a couple of B's in a very competitive private girls school in NE.
One good reason to apply now is that Rice is increasing enrollment beginning 2007 so hopefully should increase our opportunities. Good Luck.

increasing enrollment would certainly affect first-year admissions since they are clearly looking to increase those class sizes.. but it might not be the case that they will use more transfers to increase classes already here.

You may be right. However, I think/hope that initially they will open up on all fronts.

im wondering.. why did you only go to high school for two years, and what brought you to houston?

I suspose you could say that I went to HS four years but never got the credit. I attended a private school in NE. I started taking HS courses in 7th grade like honors algebra, physics, english, etc. However, the school does not count those towards HS credit requirements. My grandmother got ill and my mother and I came here to help out. While here I checked out Rice and U of H. Rice told me that I should explore the HS's in the area. A nice way of telling me "Not interested". U of H allowed me to enroll as a freshmen. I can honestly say that I am enjoying college much more than HS.

college is definitely more enjoyable than high school simply because they treat you like adults. so you never got a diploma or equivalent but you are enrolled in college?
