hey guys, i've been thinking of this for quite some time.

most of the top notch colleges say that you can change you major any time in your freshman year or even much later than that after you've been admitted. now, say in the case of upenn, the proportion of apps for wharton shall be significantly more in proportion than those for, say, forestry science.

so, if one applies for forestry science, the competition shall be much less and thus the chances of getting in shall be more. and after getting in, one can just change thwe program to business.

my question is, is this idea viable? i know its a bit like going against the spirit of apps, but im asking out of pure curiosity. what do you people think?

If the university is divided into several smaller “colleges” or “schools” or “institutes”, often those entities vary somewhat in their admission policies in the first place. In addition, there can be significant barriers that make it difficult to change from from a program in (for example) Forestry Science in the College of Agriculture to a program in Finance in the School of Business. Even within a smaller LAC, sometimes it is difficult to change majors after the first year because of course prerequisites that are specific to a particular major.

Each college and university posts this type of information right on its website. In the case of a large university use the search engine and look for “internal transfer”. For smaller institutions, simply comparing the graduation requirements of various degree programs will help you determine how easy a switch could be.
