Possible CSE Alternatives: UWB CSS or UW INFO?

I hope to get into UW's CSE department, but I've already been rejected twice. I'm giving it one more shot, but I've also been considering some alternate paths for myself in the case that I get rejected again. I've been thinking about applying for UW Bothell's Computing and Software Systems program and UW Seattle's Informatics program. If I were to be accepted by both after being rejected by CSE, which would be better in your opinion for me to choose and why? Thanks. Also any other opinions or relevant information welcomed.

I’m considering WWU’s CS program as an alternative if I don’t get into UW Seattle CSE. While I’m unsure about UWB’s CSS major, all I can say is don’t do informatics. Most of the “computing-related alternative” majors are the UW are a waste of time and money.

@MasterKuni: Why do you say that? The last sentence.

Maybe I worded that a little strongly, but the UW offers these “computing” majors under the pretense of being actual alternatives to Computer Science and not as nearly entirely unrelated majors that they are. In addition to the dubious employment opportunities, Informatics is fundamentally about dealing with information, and CS is about applied mathematics. The primary similarity is they both have something to do with computers. If you’re serious about Computer Science, do yourself a favor and avoid Informatics.

What would an informatics person do? For a job, that is?

I see. I was sort of skeptical about Informatics as well but I wasn’t sure. Any other opinions?

I would recommend calling someone from UW Bothell and asking them what the difference is between their CSS and the Seattle CSE.

I know of some Informatics majors who do hold software development engineer jobs, but it took them a lot of time outside of class and passion to “catch up” with their computer science peers who are taking courses that will directly benefit them in the industry.

Another option you could consider is ACMS, Applied and Computational Math Sciences.

This thread is relevant (there are a couple very informative posts): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/1334721-applied-computational-mathematical-sciences-acms.html</a></p>

Unfortunately I don’t meet the prerequisites for ACMS, so that’s not an option. In any case thank you for your insights.

Really? I find that surprising, considering ACMS shares the same prerequisites as CSE, except it has even fewer.

“A minimum grade of 2.0 and a GPA of at least 2.50 is required in the following set of courses: CSE 142, MATH 124, 125, 126, one of MATH 307, 308, 300, AMATH 351, 352.”

I’m guessing OP doesn’t have all the 300 MATHs and/or AMATHs done.

Oh, I must’ve read that wrong. It’s confusing they delimit everything with commas. Ever heard of a semicolon? Geez.

Taking one 3 credit Math class shouldn’t keep someone from a program.

Sigh, I read that wrong.

one of Math … is one of for both Math and AMATH? Or is all of AMATH required?

@speedsolver:run it through DARS

Whoa, ton of ACMS branches.

looks like just one of MATH or AMATH … unless I’m reading DARS wrong. I selected the Statistics branch.

Under Admission Requirements, I have everything done except:
AU12 MATH 308 3.0 IP MATRIX ALGEBRA

And no further inquiry for other MATH/AMATH prereqs for admissions.

Point is from my earlier post that the wording of the prereqs from the information page could be more clear. By changing the wording a little bit, it saves people time (student, advisers).

Are there any other options for those who don’t get into UW CSE? The only other decent program I have heard about is at Seattle University which is too epensive for most. What about out of state schools? Is WSU CSE a worth while option?

Well, I applied at UW Bothell. Most of the people I know applied at UW Seattle and Bothell. I heard some UW Seattle profs teach there too. Can anybody confirm this?

I know some UW Seattle Professors teach at UW Bothell, but I don’t know if they do that in that specific program.

Also, UW Bothell would be a better choice than Seattle U, although I’m told that for need-based aid that Seattle University is generous. But, you’re still going to a school nowhere near as good as UW.
