Okay so I’ve been in college for about a month now and I’m currently a communications major. However, since school started I have found myself liking comm less and less. I had a feeling this would happen but now that it’s actually happening I’m not sure what to do. I really love the peace studies class I’m taking and definitely feel drawn to that area of study a lot more than comm. Some people I’ve talked to have said I should add peace studies as a double major and others say I should just drop comm and be a peace studies major only. Thoughts? I’m very conflicted right now. I love peace studies but I’m afraid that majoring solely in that will be a bad idea in the long run considering I’m not even sure what jobs I could get with a peace studies degree. Anyway. Thanks!
The obvious place to start is your advisor: nobody here can give you useful advice w/o knowing your university. Barring direct admit subjects (eg, engineering, cs and few others), it is unusual in US universities for you to have a formal major this early on in your first year.
OP: Have you even declared a major yet ?
Are you in your first year of college ?
I have declared my major in communications. And yes, I am in my first year.
For a typical college, you choose what you think you want to major in and start taking classes in that area. But you do not formally declare a major until the end of Sophomore year. It is for exactly the reason you are talking about…you explore the area of interest and then make a decision later.
So first talk to your adviser about how declaring a major works at your college.
Why did you want to major in Comm at first? What did you think it would be like?
What about it don’t you like?
What do you like about peace studies?
Is there parts of communication that are applicable to what you want to do in the future?
I would imagine if you worked in the area of peace that there would be much writing, speaking and talking.
Talk to your peace studies professor. Tell them that you would like to explore more in this area and what classes would they recommend. Ask what careers could go along with peace studies and what would they recommend as a major.
