possible double majoring in Mechanical Engineering?

Hi, I just got a letter today from UIUC telling me they don't have space to put me in Mechanical Eng, but they offered me an alternative option in either Aero, Civil, Agiculture, nuclear... or Engineering mechanics/physics...instead.

Which one of those do you think I should pick to have a better chance in double majoring in mechanical engineering later on, or is it even possible?

Thanks a lot

You could also switch majors after a year or two by petition, which should be easy if your GPA is high enough (around 3.0). If you want to double major, Aero is the closest thing to Mechanical.

Is it possible to double major in computer science and computer engineering?

Well, I know that they don't allow double majors in closely related fields like EE and CompE, and that they don't allow CS minors for CompE majors. Not sure about CS and CompE majors though.

Aero is closest to being a narrower subgroup of the broad area of mechanical engineering. Engineering mechanics has a number of the same course requirements but is more theoretical based (with higher math courses required) than mechanical engineering and you can actually get a senior concentration in mechanical, materials, applied math, and others with that major. There has been discussion to actually make that major part of the Mechanical Engineering department. In any event, your first year courses, and even most of the second year will be ones that all engineering students take and you can transfer among majors in the Engineering College during that time by meeting GPA requirements (which are actually less than that 3.0 noted above which is one applicable to students transfering from another college like Arts & Sciences).

I don't know why anyone would want to double major in engineering. One is hard enough. Especially b/c Aero has the highest number of credits needed to graduate with MechE falling not far behind. It is hard enough to get a minor while engineering.
