I heard someone say that the admissions panels begin meeting on Oct. 9 and start working on early admissions. If that’s so, when could a person possibly hope for an early letter of assurance (My application is complete)?

Early offers will begin in the next couple of weeks. Depending on nomination status the offer will be an appointment ( you already have your congressional/presidential nomination) or Letters of Assurance ( you still need to complete your nomination or DoDMerb requiements). The will meet weekly from here forward. Initially they will trickle out. You will see the incoming CC crowd announce the offer as they arrive. The Majority of Appointments will occur in March so don't get disheartend. They have even been known to arrive in April and May.

We got the call last night that our daughter's package was going up today before the board. Our ALO told us. Here's hoping for daughter # two to get in.

Readhead, who is now at the academy doing well, said she received her LOA last year on October 19th. So, I suppose it is possible to hear something as soon as next week.

It is definitely going to be a stressful couple of weeks. And if the early LOA/Appointments don't come in, then it's going to be a stressful couple of months until March. My son was so excited that he was able to complete his entire application by July. He was still so fired up the month before going to the summer seminar, that the summer became a total high for him. He's done his best to just not think about it. Good for him. This way he can concentrate on school, football, and girlfriend.

Good luck to everyone. Hopefully those who got their apps in early will hear something soon.

If my S is having his "official" recruiting visit in a couple weeks, does this mean he would be ineligible for an (early) LOA?

Does anyone know when interviews for nominations are had or is it different for each senator and representative?

^^^^^
Interview schedules are determined by each individual Member of Congress. Normally, the interviews are completed by the end of December.

Fencermother. Recruiting for sports and acceptance to the academy are two different things. The academy doesn't even provide letters of intent to athletes usually until after January. This is to ensure that they are otherwise eligible and accepted to the academy. i.e. if the applicant has a 2.5gpa and ranks in the bottom 25% of their HS class, and got a 1300 on their SAT, there is little chance of them getting into the academy. Therefore, sports at the academy is probably a non issue because they can't really get in. Unofficially, look at sports as getting a nomination. It's not a nomination, but they are authorized so many slots. If all other things are within the entry requirements for an applicant, then they go out and get LOA and then their nomination from congress/senate.

So, if your sun is eligible to be considered during the early application period, then sports isn't really an issue. Now, if their eligible for an early acceptance, but maybe the academy thinks they are border line on their academics, gpa, ranking, sat/act, and all the rest of the application; and they would normally hold them out until march, the sports can kick in then and use a slot for that.

Fencersmother....He being a recruited athlete is very likely to be offered an early admission. The completion of his admission package, nomination status, and DoDMERB physical status will all be important though. If his admission package is complete they are probably going to look at it over the next few weeks. If he is a military dependent/ Disabled veterans child and DoDMERB is complete it will likely be an appointment. If he still requires a congressional nomination or part of the physical it will likely be an LOA letter of acceptance. As long as everything is squared away he should be good....then again they could make him wait until March. At a certain point it is all up to the Admission Panel.

Yep, I remember this; mine came exactly a week later on October 26th. So yeah, hypothetically, you could have a letter in hand within a week or two.

BUT if you don't, then don't freak out! Almost everyone has to wait till March! Trust me, I went through the anxieties for months until I got my appointment in March!

My LOA was dated October 19, but I didn't get it until maybe a week?? later. I'm pretty sure that was a result of the first board, but you have to take into account that I lived in a tiny little town in Oregon when I got my appointment, and then there are people like hornet who have to wait till March for their appointments even though they might be better candidates just because of demographics... Just be patient. I know it's hard! But I'm so excited to see all of the 2012ers posting with news of LOAs and appointments. I know it's going to start happening soon! I know it's probably too early to think about, but I am also excited to be a 3 degree and have a coachee and start to be a leader! :) June 26, 2008 is going to be a great day... I think I'm more ecxited than 2012!

hehe.. havin a coachee, eh? i dunno if you're more excited, we're just more nervous.... you still have 75% of this year to go!! geez quit thinkin bout next year :)

S's stats are way way above minimums so I don't think that will be any issue. Well, I guess I am guilty of wishful thinking and heartfelt hoping. S wants to go... TODAY!

Waiting's the toughest part!

I hate to rain on the parade or sound arrogant....but my stats were WELL above the minimums or averages in academics and leadership. My Ac comp (score out of 4000 using the magic formula) was in the top 60 people. It's a combination of your demographics, like redhead said, and what they are looking for. I feel for yall, I understand where you are coming from. If S gets the LOA, then that's awesome and you should be that much more proud, but if he doesn't, it means nothing as far as his qualifications and I'm sure you know that.

I appreciate your insight, Hornetguy. And, of course, you are right.

We heard from the BGO last night that there are 350+ applicants to the USNA from our district. He didn't know the numbers for USAFA. Ouch! That's a lot of kids looking for extremely limited spots. S applied to USNA as his second choice and his ALO from AFA expressed dismay about that. S explained it is a back-up position and ALO relaxed a bit. Hey, they don't have fencing at Annapolis!

Oh, as an aside: S found a tie at Walmart the other day with AF logo all over it. It's actually not horrible! He hasn't bought it yet, but is considering the purchase and wearing of same while on his "official visit." (Just kidding about that last part. Even S thinks that might be a little over the top!)
