I forgot to submit my housing option and missed the deadline. I live all the way in the city without a license, so there is almost no way I can commute everyday(I am going to get the license during the school semester). My friends were nice and said I can stay with them for the semester or until I get my own place/car.

On the opening day, when everyone drags there things to the room, will the RAs or someone care about that? and what should I say?

No, get housing in a nearby neighborhood. Hit Craiglist looking for a roommate or place. You’ll look like a jerk if you hang around the dorm without belonging.

First of all, that is really nice of your friends but you have to think about the larger picture. If this is a corridor style dorm, there is no way 3 people can live in those cramped rooms in harmony. If it is a suite style and you will be in the common area, this will be a hassle for the other suitmates who now have to deal with a random stranger in their living space. Your friends don’t have the right to put them through this without permission.

Now, the deadline for housing was a loooooonnnnnnng time ago-- in may, I believe. Why did you wait all this time to get a plan B? I am off campus and know for a fact that the economy is affecting that market as well, so there are still a lot of places. But they will be filling very quickly and most require you signing a lease and putting down a deposit, so you better arrange something as soon as humanly possible…

Also, NO off campus plaecs are not associated with the school. They are houses owned by a landlord and rented out to make money. A lot of these places are houses occupied by students only others are just rooms in a family’s house. They don’t give a crap if you have financial aid or not, but they go for an average $600 + utilities, which can be cheaper than the dorms.

From reading about your situation, you’d better shape up FAST. There is absolutely no way you’re going to do well or last in college with that kind of poor planning and procrastination. Your friend was nice to offer you to stay, but that should have been just a friendly gesture, not something you would actually consider doing. You have tons of work to do ahead of you as you seem to still be heavily rooted in the American high school culture and system; you will either adapt or sink, it’s your own choice…

Yes, people live in other friend’s rooms illegally. No, you probably won’t be caught. RA’s don’t check that sort of thing (and have no right to). Yes, it is very rude to the roommate(s) especially if the room is already tripled. If everyone is cool with it, consider helping them pay for room and board.

Have you considered using the LIRR instead? We have a station right on campus. If you need to crash for a night, people stay overnight at the Library commuter lounge all the time. You will be sleeping in a chair, but I have done it.
