Af. Am female, inner-city school, valedictorian, 4 AP classes this year, 2 last year....only 34% of students from high school, overcome enormous obstacles in life, top-notch couns/teacher recs ("one of the best," etc), strong in activities, exc. personal essay

does columbia superscore...would a 23.5 be a 24?

do you mean that only 34% go to college from your school?

pretty they round a 23.5 up to a 24, but that’s not superscoring. superscoring combines scores from different tests. most schools superscore SAT’s, but not ACT’s. Columbia does not superscore ACT’s.

and i’m sorry, but I would really highly doubt a 24 would make the cut, unless you REALLY REALLY stand out in the rest of your app. that being said, schools look at context. given your circumstances, it would be much more understandable to have a low ACT score than a more privileged individual who has better resources and access to study materials for such a test… although in theory it’s not a test you can study for…

It is possible, yes, but highly, highly unlikely. Columbia obviously would need to consider carefully your application and your use of the rigor made availible to you. Did you take the SAT? Generally, the SAT is looked at as being more conducive to revealing innate mettle, whereas the ACT focuses on the curriculum you learn. Therefore, I would highly, highly suggest you take the SAT, because if you are genuinely a qualified candidate, you should score much better, at least in the 1800 range, based on intellect alone. That’s what they are looking at in these sorts of schools is your intelligence. If you can prove to them that you’re a smart kid, then I don’t doubt you have a shot at admissions, especially with recs like you claim, but again, you need to demonstrate to them that your ACT does not accurately reflect your ability to reason and think cogently.

Actually, a student from my school got in with an ACT score of 21. He’s enrolled there now and doing great. He overcame enormous hardships and thankfully Columbia understood that. Go for it.

thanks for all the info…actually, I’m a counselor new to the field, am not the young lady myself and just wanted to see what ppl thought out there; she’s an incredible person and has submitted to some of the top-tier schools as well as target and safety schools, so she will end up somewhere good.
thanks again.

chugabi, I wish you were my counselor. You seem really interested in your student’s future. My counselor acts like this whole application process is one big joke.

If her resume is really that stellar, she should take the SATs or, at the very least, the ACT again. Sounds like she just had a bad day. A REALLY bad day.

She’s got an incredible application, but such a low score like that is a serious red flag. It’s not impossible, but her chances would dramatically increase if she raised her score a bit.
