Possible to get into UCB or UCLA Econ major w/ 3.8 GPA?

Hi, I'm not a CCC student. I attend at a 4-year in NYC. I have GREAT EC's, great volunteer stuff, etc, however my GPA is only a 3.8. I have taken very rigorous courses (3000+ level math/poli sci/econ, and a 4000 level poli sci, in addition to approx 23 credits fall '10, 19 spring '11, 18 fall '11, and 19 spring '12). I have straight A's and 1 C in biology. Do I have a chance of either?

Yes, you have a good shot. However, the tuition is going to be that of a private school…but if they are your dream school go for it.

Really??? I have no problem paying the tuition for such great schools! When I looked up the stats, it said that Econ was an impacted major (on UCLA) and that their average GPA acceptance was a 3.94 (for UCLA). I figure for Berkeley it must be close to a 4.0

ur stats seem ok. with a 3.8 u may need a great personal statement. From what id heard, UCla and UCB are the only UC that will use personal statement to determine ur admission.

Can I get more opinions? I want to know if I should spend $150 + a lot of my time.

Admissions look at your gpa to see how academically prepared you are to attend their institution. Successfully completing 18+ units each semester and higher level courses demonstrate that you are. Also, keep in mind that the only non-A grade you have is in Biology-- a class that is not major-related. I think you have a great chance! If you are really interested in attending UCLA, applying is definitely worth your time and effort.

Yakov, if you apply, you will have a chance. Definitely worth since u will probably (estimate) 70% of getting accepted with a good personal statement. I say work ur butt on that PS.
btw are you going to finish all the prereqs?? if not then dont bother lol. preqreq is very important for ucla and ucb… If u did, go for it.

The prereqs seem very vague to me. If you mean prereqs for Econ major, then yes, i have them all, if there are some sort of general prereqs, maybe not. Here’s what I’ve done + Will be done

Biology
English Composition, 1, and 2
Philosophy
Anthropology
Pre-Calc + elements of Calc
Applied Calc 2
Integral Calculus
Intro-Micro-Econ Honors
Intro-Macro-Econ Honors
Intermediate Micro-Econ
Public Administration Honors
Communications
Psychology
Western/Modern Political Theory
Statistics
Great Works of Literature PRE 1850
Intro to Theater
Accounting
Computer Information Systems Honors
Intro to Business
Politics of Human Intervention

Additionally, I’ve got AP credit in

AP-US History (5)
AP-US Gov’t (5)
AP-Comparative Gov’t (5)
As you can see, I’ve got Intro Micro/Macro (honors, both A’s), Intermediate micro, and stats, which I believe are the prereqs. In addition, I’ve got a bunch of general education requirements, in addition to a few business courses that I will consider electives (Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Intro to Business). I have a minor in political science done as well. Lastly, I’ve got those APs…

So do I have all the pertinent prereqs?

I realize that is a lot to read, but thank you if you have, I appreciate all the input!

EDIT: One thing to note, is that I have no foreign language because all NYC HS’s have an optional language exam you can take in 12th grade which exempts you from taking a language. I took that in Spanish and passed…it is relatively easy for anyone who knows even basic Spanish. Additionally, I can demonstrate mastery in Russian.

Anyone?..

sorry, i missed this haha.
btw for ucla ur done with prereq.
econ 1 and 2
cal 1 and 2.
btw did you finish accounting 2? if yes, i say u can apply for business econ as well.

im not sure about UCB, but i believe the main core are
econ 1 and 2, stat, accounting 1 and 2. cal 1 , 2, 3
If you finished them all, go ahead and apply for business admin + business econ, econ.

I do not have Accounting 2, can I take it in the summer here or at ucb? Additionally, does it not matter about any general requirements? I heard about the IHETC,since I go to a nyc college we don’t have that so does that mean they will be more lenient?

Btw, thanks so much!!

For Cal Econ you need to have completed Econ 1 and Econ 2 (Micro & Macro) + Calc 1 and Calc 2 (Differential and Integral calc) + Intro to Stats. You definitely have those covered so you’re good to apply.

My main concern would be the completion of IGTEC as according to assist,

"By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete either:

1) The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and
Foreign Language; OR
2) IGETC "

You can look up the IGETC or Berkeley L&S Requirements and see if there is overlap, and if you’re missing stuff you can take it sometime this year.

They only count classes up until the spring quarter/semester before enrollment in the fall so technically speaking the classes you say you will take in the summer of 2012, they won’t consider but should you be accepted, I’m sure it would be possible to take in the summer.

It’s tough being out of state but good luck! You’re definitely a competitive/realistic applicant

Definitely apply. They admit by colleges so you’ll be admitted into College of letters/science and not as an econ major if you get in. Once you’re in you’re supposed to take some econ/stat courses and then apply for the major in your first sem.

This is why there are barely any prereqs for berkeley econ, because youre taking a bulk of your classes once you get admitted.

Maninder, as you can see I don’t have the foreign language rec, does that mean I shouldn’t bother with either?

@maninder: i thought intro to stats is to be taken in UCB once admitted for econ majors? Right?

@ Yakov, I think the language requirement is very subjective because the requirements in your home state are a little different. I think in the application you can mention in the additional comments that by NY standards you are proficient in Spanish and that you can demonstrate, as you said, mastery in Russian. If you’re going to apply you should decide soon because you’ll have to do the application still and there’s only 9 days left to submit it.

@ strive101, you’re right, most CCC’s don’t meet Berkeley’s criteria for Stats but if you’re not going to be a CCC transfer and from a 4 year, I think it wouldn’t hurt to have taken Stats at a university, even if it doesn’t equate. I’m guessing you’re a UC to UC Econ transfer?

@Maninder, thanks for the reply. And yes, UC UC Econ transfer
on the site, it says

“At least one math or stat prerequisite course must be taken at UC Berkeley. For transfer students, this is typically the statistics course. The prerequisite intermediate theory course must be taken at UC Berkeley.”

So I’m fine if I don’t do stats, right?(as I have everything else) It’s just that as I am done with econ prereqs, I’m focusing on GE’s right now to get UC Reciprocity
