I'm a rising junior, and Latin is something that I really want to learn but we do not have the course at my school. I just got Hans Orberg's Latin book and have been working through. I'm actually loving the language, it is so interesting and neat! I would like to take the AP Latin exam by the ebd of senior year, is that enough time to stdy it on my own basically from scratch?

Totally, it just depends on your commitment. You have 2 years to prepare, but if you only study every 2 days then that’s only a year, and it keeps decreasing from there. If you studied 5-15 minutes a day I think that you could do it. Good luck!

I would say that it’s certainly possible, but devilishly difficult. I’ve been self-studying for a while now, and you’ll come across things that will stump you. If you can trudge through those portions that you find difficult about the language you’ll do fine.

The time frame is also something to worry about. My rough estimate as to the amount of studying you’d need to do to get to the “Vergil Level” in two years would be about 20+ hours a week. Do you have that kind of time? If so, go for it! Latin’s a great language to learn. If not, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed quickly as I’ve heard of many students who have taken Latin for 4+ years of formal classes who have gotten 1’s on the exam. Granted, those students may not have been too dedicated, but it’s still nothing to scoff at.

Anyway, if you do decide to study Latin, good luck! I’m also a rising Junior, but I’m taking AP Vergil this year.
