This is my first year at uni and it's midterm week. However, the weekend before midterm week started, I was suddenly thrown into the midst of a bunch of not so pleasant things including serious roommate issues which made me have to find other places to sleep and such, being sick (stuffy/runny nose, fatigue), conflicts with friends, and just general midterm stress. In the middle of my midterms I was literally blowing my nose every 3 minutes which made it extremely hard to focus on the problems and finish within the time limit. I don't know how empathetic professors are allowed to be on such personal problems, but what do you guys suggest I do?

I doubt he/she would do anything. Personally, I have never heard of a professor giving a redo on a midterm except for one extreme case. If it was me, I wouldn’t approach him about it. Just try hard for the rest of class! But you really have nothing to lose by asking…

I’ve never heard of a midterm redo in college. BUt I hope you’re feeling better!

You’re basically asking for a midterm redo because you had a runny nose during the test. If he gives you a second chance at it, he has to give everyone the same opportunity, and that’s not going to happen. I suggest you say nothing, because asking would only make you look foolish.

Spdf I realize what you’re trying to say but I think I had a bigger load than some other people because I was also trying to study for 2 other classes, not to mention having breakdowns almost everyday because of my rooming situation and having to find someplace to stay the night. I would say it was more than just a runny nose during a test.

No 99999 out of 100,000 you will not get a redo. In the midst of depression, roommate issues, family issues, and being sick, I had to take midterms and finals. I did not score as highly as I should have but there is no way they let you retake. Most professors make this very clear at the beginning of the semester.

No, there possibly are other people who went through a lot of problems just like you did, and if they don’t get to retake the midterm, what makes you think you do? It is unfeasible for a professor to let students retake the exams, especially if it’s a class with more than 200 students. A lot of my professors have stressed on the first day that even if they were sick in the hospital the day of the midterm or someone in the family died, they would NOT allow anyone to retake an exam, whether it be midterms or finals, and that students who have issues either drop the class or take an Incomplete at the end of the quarter (with prior instructor approval). I reckon it’s the same with most other professors at other universities as well.
