Possible to Transfer During Freshmen Year?

I was rejected to NYU Stern when I was in high school, and now I am currently studying Finance at Penn State Smeal College of Business. But I haven’t given up my dream to study at NYU…

Now I am hoping to transfer into NYU’s CAS for Spring 2018, will this be possible? I aim to have a 3.8-4.0 GPA while I’m at PSU, would my high school stats be relevant at all? Thanks

It depends on how many college credits you will have completed at the time of application. NYU recommends 32. Spring Transfer applications are due Nov 1, so you will have only mid-term grades to submit for the Fall semester. So yes, I think NYU will be very interested in your high school record, including standardized testing.

If you are submitting your transfer application during your first semester that is all they have to look at. If you were denied last year you will be denied again.

You had a 1300 and a 3.3 in high school. Wait to transfer in as a junior, you may have a chance.

If you are so certain that you will get a 3.8-4.0 at PSU why didn’t you excel in high school?

Applying for a second time is only advised after you’ve had enough time to…

A) Distance yourself from your high school academics.
B) Make yourself a compelling transfer applicant.

Not meeting these two contingencies will likely get you rejected. In your case, if you apply again DURING your freshman year, you’ll get rejected.

Since you haven’t explicitly given a reason as to why you want to enter NYU CAS now, I’m going to assume you’re thinking of transferring into NYU CAS to then internally transferring into NYU Stern. Boy, do you have another thing coming. NYU CAS is still a VERY competitive college, not terribly far from NYU Stern’s selectivity.

@TomSrOfBoston I realized that was my mistake not to excel in high school, and so far my courses are pretty manageable here (school started a week ago). I’m afraid transferring as a junior would limit my networking. Since I am aiming to attend CAS and not Stern, my opportunities would be way limited for someone who intends to focus a career path orientated towards IB. What are your thoughts of maybe applying for sophomore year? Much appreciated your opinion

@TransferStalker I want to enter CAS now because I was rejected by Stern mainly because of low stats. I am paying almost the same for an education at Smeal compared to NYU, and NYU is a known target school for top IB opportunities, but less than Stern of course, so it’ll be only wise to apply again with more a stronger GPA and more involvements in college. I am actually not looking forward to transferring into Stern because I know that NYU’s policy does not allow external transfers complete an internal transfer. I don’t see how CAS is competitive at all as compared with Stern, I’ve acknowledged that they accepted students with way lower stats than my high school stats before and now still. Would studying abroad boosts my chance of admission because I’ll be getting fairly easy classes, means higher GPA, and more experience? Do you think it’ll be better for me to apply as a sophomore? I need to get out of Smeal as soon as I can so I can get started with networking with NYU’s resources and network. Thank you for your appraisal.

Everything’s manageable in the first three days of classes.

You should study abroad if you have a genuine interest in it. I do not recommend making any choices at your current college in an attempt to increase your admissions chance. I’d tread lightly on the topic of course load. “Easier classes” doesn’t always translate to a higher GPA.
