No, you can't transfer before September, you have to do a full year in CAS first. And deferring won't work. If you defer, you'd have to apply all over again in a year as a freshman.

Go48, that was a pretty stupid move on your part.

Matth, I think you are wrong on deferring leading to applying all over again. I've heard people can take a year off and then start college even if they get admitted now.

Birch, you misunderstood me. Of course, you can defer but you can't defer and then switch to another NYU college. That was what he was asking. If he defers and he still wants to switch to Stern, he'd have to reapply.

so then : how easy is it to transfer after a year ? whats the accpetance rate?

Go,

Nobody knows what the acceptance rate is...its an INTERNAL transfer for chrissakes, thus its not published, and its something that very few ever even want to do. This type of transfer is pretty rare (I've only known very few who tried to do it), and its done on a case by case basis. Know that Stern is a pretty small school, internal transfer to it is never guaranteed unless you were in GSP--and in that case you're only guaranteed to whatever NYU school you originally applied to.

This is why NYU tells you to APPLY TO SCHOOL YOU WANT TO GO TO...did you think they were just joking when they said that?

wait but on the information packet i got
it said to contact the manager of office of undergraduate admission
if you want to transfer from a school to school..
so I guess it's possible to transfer?

im on the same boat... at first i didnt know what i wanted to do and thus chose CAS (the most "general" college) but now i'm thinking that business might not be too bad.

and on their site they say that you'd have to apply for transfer march NEXT YEAR if u wanted to change.

Like Jwblue said, it's VERY rare. This is why they specifically tell you to apply to the school you really want to go to! Do not count on going in to NYU through CAS and transferring to Stern. It just doesn't happen very often. Again, Stern is pretty small and they're only going to accept an internal transfer if there's room, which there usually isn't because the retention rate at Stern is good. For the same reasons, they do not allow students who have transferred into CAS from another college to then request an internal transfer to Stern.

Internal transfers at NYU do happen, and yes, the application for an internal transfer is done in March, but they do not happen often enough into Stern for any of you to make this your plan. You're going to be very disappointed. I'm not sure how Jwblue and I can make that any clearer to you.

Matth, where can I see the retention rate at Stern?

jwblue, no i didnt think it was a joke.. first, like y17k, i wasnt sure about doing business then and also i didnt think i stood a chance at stern nor did i realize that not all schools do undergrad business...
but if i end up doing econ at CAS, do i benefit from great stern job placement, prestige etc... ??

cindelicious, i thought i saw the same thing somewhere... im going to admit student thing at nyu soon so ill ask someone there..

call the school, they can give you the most direct answer.

Go,

"like y17k, i wasnt sure about doing business"

Do you want to STUDY business or have a business related career/start a businessr?...they are 2 totally different things, and you don't have to study business to work in business areas.

"but if i end up doing econ at CAS, do i benefit from great stern job placement, prestige etc... ??"

Few things here:
a) When corporate recruiters come to NYU, they'll recruit all majors, with the exceptions being things that are very specialized..namely accounting, comp sci/tech, and science stuff. I had a liberal arts major and became an investment banker after college....your major won't mean anything if you have good grades and show the corporate world you have the skills for business.

b) As for CAS econ. vs. Stern finance: Look they are not the same thing, econ. is more theory, while finance is more practical and real world based. Obviously for finance jobs, Sternies will have the edge because they know the actual finance, while the econ. major in CAS will have to learn the finance (either on his own or by taking a couple Stern classes). Basically, the econ. major will have to more legwork since econ. is not really a business major, but if you have the grades and drive, it shouldn't be a problem. Sternies will probably be cut some more slack on grades than CAS econ. majors, but then again Stern has a brutal curve, so Stenies will have lower GPAs. CAS's econ. department is very top notch, and in general, has pretty steller placement on wall st.

As for transferring to Stern, know the following:
-even if you do transfer after a year, CAS and Stern have very different requirements, so you'll be behind the people in your class. You may not be able to graduate in 4 years, and in all liklihood not be able to double major or minor in Stern.

thanks a lot jwblue

You can do an Econ. major at CAS, and a Finance minor at Stern:)

Not usually possible. Traditionally, the only students at NYU who are allowed to minor at Stern are Tischies.

CAS students can take Stern classes (upto 16 credits I), and the CAS/ Stern minor is simply called pre-business.

Two friends of mine in CAS are doing the pre-business courses but it isn't considered a Stern minor. It's a CAS minor. Most of the classes are in CAS and from what I've heard, the students refer to it as business-lite. So there ya go.

my choice now is more or less between nyu CAS with the hope of transferring into stern or Northwestern..leaning toward northwestern...any opinions?

Out of the pre-business minor classes, the only class I truly reccomend is financial markets. Other things like accounting, organization mgmt., marketing, are too specialized, probably don't appeal much to people in CAS, its better to be in Stern for in-depth study of these things.

go48: What exactly do you need opinions on? Where do you want to work? For NY, take NYU, for Chi-town, take Northwestern.
