I noted on my CSU application that I was planning on taking a Calc. I class at my local community college during the Spring 2011 quarter. However, I now fear that I may fail the class. Should I continue, even though I most likely may not be able to pull off a C, or should I drop the class w/ a “W” on my community college transcript, still showing that I attempted the class? Btw, this class was not intended to be taken as part of my A-G requirements; it is only an attempt to knock off a year of calc. for my college GE requirements.

Also, I’m afraid that whatever the course of action taken, my conditional admission to CPSLO will be withdrawn. Is there any way to find out how much this course impacted my admission before the May 1st admission offer acceptance deadline? When I called the CPSLO admissions office, they were very vague but I’m wondering if they’d be able to calculate and determine this issue’s weight at request.

Part of me thinks that from the bureaucratic perspective, they’d keep me because they want my money and I’m pretty sure they don’t have a waitlist of students to contact should I be denied. But I don’t want to take any chances… Last thing I want is to accept my offer of admission, find out I’m denied after the May 1st deadline, and not have a chance to reply to offers of admission from any of my other colleges.

My advice to you would be to take the W, since you don’t foresee, with confidence, that you will pull off a C. Firstly, calculus is a foundational class for any science majors. No one can get through a life/basic science program without passing it. Therefore, you want to avoid demonstrating to your prospective colleges that you were less than proficient at a subject that all science/engineering schools deemed essential and fundamental (it might imply you aren’t well suited for their prospective program).

Additionally, a W is a non-grade and won’t count toward your GPA, a D or F will adversely impact your GPA. And obviously your GPA is not just for Cal Poly but for all your other universities. Although if you take the W, it will still show up on your transcript for the class attempt.

That’s another concern I have though… The admissions office did tell me that a drop/“W”, a D or an F will trigger my application to be sent through a secondary review. I’ve been thinking about contacting the College of Science and Mathematics there and seeing their opinion on the matter (because I think they’d prefer if I learn from their curriculum anyways). Would that be a smart course of action though? I’d definitely want to try it if they might have even a little say in my application’s case, but I’m not sure…

hey willhsu93 can u keep us updated as to what admissions say if they withdraw your admissions? I’m kind of in a similar situation. college of math & science. it sounds like ur a freshman maybe? i’m a transfer and they’ve had my transcript since early March and they still have not processed it so…they don’t know about my D yet even though i e-mailed them early march. I call them once a week to see if there is an update haha which there never is. i asked if i’ll know by open house or at least by may 1st but they always tell me they don’t know which really sucks. If we already accepted are we allowed to accept other schools just incase cal poly withdraws our admissions? idk…

Hey willhsu93 what happened? Did you get accepted? I’m in the same situation.
