Im rather new here and have just recently began looking to transfer from my current school.

This is my second semester at CSU Fresno in which I ended up with a 3.5 gpa in my first semester. Im currently in my second semester and technically undecided, however, I know I want to major in some are of business.

I was wondering what the deal is with UCSB. I love the campus and really am desiring to move away to fully attain the "college experience".

With my gpa do I have a chance to get in? Do I have to finish my GE first? Should I transfer to a CC in order to save money?

You do have a chance to get in with your gpa but remember Fresno State has a very good school of business. Cost of living is hugely different-you will be paying for the beach that’s for sure. We’re in the central valley too. One son graduated as a Bulldog and one attends UCSB currently. Fresno is much cheaper but certainly not as beachy and beautiful. No football for the Gauchos so if you have been part of the Red Wave you might miss that. All that aside if you want to leave town and money is no problem UCSB is nice and my son parties and studies!

Does anyone know if UCSB offers any business program outside of Biz-econ?

Im a Fresno State fan first and foremost. Don’t get me wrong, I was at USC when they played when they played that magical game and I will never forget that night. However, I am currently living at home and going to school and feel like school is almost like a job? I don’t party, but I really want to move out of my families wing and be able to start my own independent life in a more challenging setting. What would you reccomend?

It is certainly in your best interest to transfer to a CCC and then apply, as CCC students are given preference over all other transfer applicants.

Not sure if you mean (1) is your current GPA, if continued, strong enough to be a good candidate, or (2) can you apply now and get in with your current stats.

if (1), you might want to do some research on the web to see if you can find charts of admit rates by GPA. Certainly UCSB favors CC transfers, as required by CA law. They admitted 70% of those applying from CC’s, but only 47% from other 4-year colleges. And at a CC you can enroll in the guaranteed admission program, which makes your odds 100% if you complete it successfully.

If (2), they won’t look at your app until you are applying for your junior year.

Look, getting into a UC from somewhere besides CC is sort of a crap shoot. I don’t think it is necessarily HARD, but it is certainly RANDOM. There are no guarantees. You are coming from a CSU, which makes things difficult because some of your classes won’t transfer over.

Plenty of people with 3.5+ GPAs can get into a good UC from a lower CSU or UC, so you definitely have a shot. I would just strongly recommend, if you dislike CSU Fresno, to transfer into a CCC and get TAG, which would guarantee you into UCSB after you complete the required courses. This is actually a common thing to do.

Also, you are going to need to have 60 semester credits before you can transfer. Sophomore transfers don’t really happen all that often, especially now when there are way too many transfers for spots. You would be applying for Fall 2011.

apply and see. 3.5 is good. do good for the next year and you will have a shot. try and get 60 units under your belt by this time next year and you could have a chance… because i dont think ucsb allows winter transfers

I have heard SBCC has this TAG you speak of…would transferring there be somewhat simple? Is the program with an auto acceptance to UCSB difficult to get into?

Also while I am really considering Biz-econ I know for a fact I do not want to go into accounting…I am still somewhat undecided but I think UCSB would look much better on my resume when applying for graduate school then CSU Fresno. I know I will find myself somewhere within business…possibly management but I am still undecided in the precise are of business.

^ no it’s fairly easy. Just maintain a 3.0 GPA and complete your GE and Pre-req courses for your major. TAG is available at almost all california community colleges but SBCC has an amazing campus right off the beach. and if you live in Isla Vista you can still have a social life… I’m trying to go there this fall but idk if my parents will let me. we’ll see…

also sorry to say but biz-econ is no more at UCSB - they changed it to econ and accounting.

yes it is that easy, its not like a program you have to fight to get into. the only real exception to that is cal, ucla, and davis all require signed agreements with contracts so those are kinda difficult but other than that its just doing it. lol

" 1. Apply for admission to UCSB during the application filing period for fall 2010 (November 1-30, 2009). There is no additional paperwork to submit to qualify for this agreement."

As long as you fufill their requirements there is no application or paperwork. It really doesn’t matter when you transfer you just need 30 credits to apply (and then 60 by the time you enroll at ucsb) although I suppose this upcoming fall semester would be logical.
