Possible Transfer Student

I am a freshman at Kenyon College and I am interested in transferring to Denison. I currently have a 4.0 gpa at Kenyon and don't think i will end the year with anything less than a 3.875. i am not involved in a lot of activities here (thats part of the reason i am not content-can't seem to find a group or organization to click with). I had a 3.875 GPA (unweighted) in high school and a 31 ACT. Can anyone give me an idea as to my chances of being admitted as a transfer student for next fall? Thanks.

If you've got a 4.0 at Kenyon, I can't imagine that they wouldn't accept you if they're taking students. However, you best contact them soon. We have found the Admissions Office to be very friendly and helpful.

thanks for the opinion. yeah i am actually going to see if i can get an interview next week, and maybe sit in on a class.

anyone else have any advice? also, are there any merit scholarships available to transfer students. I know they probably give most of that money to incoming freshman but it would sure be nice if they set aside just a little bit for transfers. I know i could use it after paying for a year at kenyon where, by the way, the financial aid and scholarship packages are horrible.

coffeemate:

You really should talk to admissions. They are SUPER friendly and helpful. I know nothing at all about transferring into Denison, but I have a freshman son there. He loves it.

However, it strikes me that Denison and Kenyon are so similar that it might be sort of a strange choice for you. What kinds of things do you like to do? What makes Denison attractive to you?

i know the admissions office at denison is great aren't they.
i had a lot of experience with them when i was looking at schools last year. anyway, yeah i know they are very similar, but from my previous experience with both schools they have their differences too. the student body at denison really attracts me. i found in my tours and visits last year that i really fit in with the denison students better but i made the mistake of choosing kenyon only because of its slightly higher academic reputation.

by the way, i am very happy with the liberal arts education i am getting, so in that sense i think i woud be pleased to attend some place like denison which is academically similar to kenyon. (as opposed to a larger/less personal college or university)

anyone else? does anyone know how hard it is to transfer into denison?

come on someone has to know something. maybe? oh, by the way, i don't know if it would matter, but i have family ties to a denison alum who i am sure has been very generous in contributing to the university's endowment.

even if no one knows anything about transferring, could someone give me some general advice about denison. like it/dislike it? what is the social life really like? how hard would you rate the work? etc... Obviously these are things i have already done extensive research on, but i can always use some new opinions. any help is appreciated. Thanks.

coffeemate: There aren't too many people on the forum from Denison. (I can't recall any students...) My son is a freshman there and I asked him if he knew any transfer students and he said he didn't think so. He has made lots of good friends there, and is involved in a couple of club sports plus orchestra and jazz band. He is very happy. His only negative comment? He hates the food.

I think his courses are challenging, very interactive (probably similar to Kenyon that way). He seems to know, and like, his profs.

On weekends there is usually something going on; movies, a lecture or comedian, a concert. Sometimes they go to Easton Center. Sometimes he is away at frisbee tournaments. I know he eats at a place in town every Friday night. They have kitchens in the dorms, so sometimes he cooks a dessert or something (he's into cooking). Kids do not go home on weekends.

Like all colleges, there is the normal too-much-drinking partying, but can be avoided. Not a big frat scene, although a fair number of girls in sororities.

Student body is fairly diverse -- CONSIDERING where they are. It is probably similar to Kenyon; lots of Ohio kids, but all states represented. He has friends from Connecticut, California, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, etc.

Freshman mostly live together. One quad is all freshman, another quad is upper classmen (and one freshman building), there are beautiful apartments for upper classmen, and there are the former frat houses which house kids. (Kids like those houses - they get to know each other really well.) Like Kenyon, kids have to live on campus.

The town Denison is in is way better than Kenyon's, and a bigger town (Newark) is closer by. Lots of kids have cars.

weenie:
thanks for the info. I know Granville is way better than Gambier! I love it there. Your son plays ultimate? I really want to play. I was going to play here, but, as i said, i just don't really fit in with the team, or anybody for that matter. I am really starting to wonder why in the world i chose kenyon over denison. oh well, hopefully everything will work itself out. i am going to call the admissions office today and ask them if there is anything special i should be doing. I would really like to get an interview next week, if at all possible. I would also like to sit in on a class and maybe have luch or just chat with a student. It doesn't surprise me that your son doesn't know any transfers...they only had 23 last year. a whopping 1% haha. Maybe he'll get to know me next year, if everything works out. who knows. thanks again

Good News. I am going to have an interview and sit in on a class next week. I am very excited. Man, I sure hope i have some sort of chance to get in. I wasn't worried about it last year, but with such limited space for transfers, its kinda scary. oh well, guess i'll just see how it goes.

Good luck coffemate. :) Hope you land someplace that makes you happy. Have you thought about looking at bigger schools? My second son is interested in Ohio University in Athens. Apparently they have a great honors program too.

your other son like OU huh? My roommate is actually from athens. His mom is a prof. at OU. Its a beautiful campus. Too big for me though. I really enjoy the liberal arts environment and i think it will prepare me well for law school. OU is amazing though. i have heard nothing but good things from everyone i know who goes/went there. and my roommate has raved about the honors program.

Coffemate09:

Good luck. I graduated from Denison in the early 1990s, and really enjoyed my experience there.

Well, I know its been a long time since I've posted, but I just thought I would finish off the discussion by saying that I have been accepted to Denison and will be attending in the fall. I am very excited. They also gave me a large merit scholarship, which my parents really like. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Congratulations coffemate! I think you'll have a great time. Do you know what dorm you'll be in?

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I don't know what dorm I'll be in. They said they would send me more info when they received my enrollment card. My interviewer did tell me they would try to place me in an area with a lot of sophomores though. I am just ready to get there and meet some new people. Maybe I'll meet your son, I am very interested in playing ultimate so, if he continues to play, its likely. Thanks again for your help.
