Possible transfer to a CSU need help!

Okay so I applied to a bunch of schools among them are a few CSUs.

I was told by 4 counselors at my CCC that to get an AA-T degree (which guarantees CSU admission) I only needed to get IGETC certified for UC's because UCLA was my goal school and get the 60 units etc...and if I got that consequently I would be guaranteed admission to a CSU.

So I submitted my apps saying I wasn't doing a speech class because I was told I didn't. Need to to get the Degree and I would be guaranteed admission anyways.

Now I've found out that's completely untrue and have to take a speech class for admission and to get the AA-T degree.

So I've planned a speech class for next summer 2014 and will get the Degree at the end of summer 2014.

My questions: how can I change my app to say I'm taking a speech class because I did note on my apps that I was in an AA-T degree program, but that I wasn't taking a speech class.

Also if I get the degree at the end of the summer semester does that still guarantee me admission??

I’m fairly sure you have to complete the “golden 4”, which includes Speech by the end of spring. Courses taken during summer count towards your transferable units, but any specific requirements should be done by spring.

Is it possible for you to take it in Spring?

Possible yes possible for me to maintain my GPA no.

An AA-T is a guaranteed admission and nowhere does it state u must have the degree by Spring just that if u have it you’re guaranteed admission.

You will not be guaranteed admission unless you complete all of the requirements for your AA-T by the end of Spring 2014. You can still apply as a transfer student, but you will not be guaranteed admission and admittance will be on a “space-available basis.”

Do you have somewhere on the AA-T info that it’s required by end of Spring or some solid source??

Each CSU may have their own specific rules about when courses must be completed. I would suggest you review the policies of the specific CSUs you’ve applied to.

So is the guarantee thrown out the window or…?

Each CSU has their own admissions policies, but most of them require that you finish all required courses by the end of Spring of 2014. A stipulation of the AA-T/AS-T is that you must meet all of the CSU’s admission requirements in order to be eligible for the admission guarantee.

This is the wording of the law requiring CSUs to admit AAT students.

“Notwithstanding Chapter 4 (commencing with Section 66201), the California State University shall guarantee admission with junior status to any community college student who meets all of the requirements of Section 66746. Admission to the California State University, as provided under this article, does not guarantee admission for specific majors or campuses.”

None of Chater 4 states anything about when the AAT must be granted by to guarantee the admission. As far as the law is concerned as long as you apply at the right time and have your AAT prior to the start of the Fall semester the CSU system is bound by the law to admit you.

Am I wrong in my understanding of the law?

(I’m using the actual law SB 1440 as my source not just the website that’s glamorized to make it appealing to everyone)

http://www.sb1440.org/Portals/4/sb1440home/Policy/sb_1440_bill_20100929_chaptered.pdf

Obviously you can do whatever you decide is best, but you’re kind of in this situation because you were trying to get around a requirement. You didn’t want to take the speech class and you chose to believe people who told you you didn’t need it when several people told you that you did. Now you’re trying to take the class later than most people would recommend, and I would just hate to see you unable to transfer to a CSU in the fall, because you were again trying to get around a requirement. I’m all about working smarter not harder, but the transfer requirements for the UC’s and the Cal states are pretty specific, and there’s not really a lot of wiggle room for most of them.

Do you think it’d be better for me to attempt to balance six courses next semester none of which are in my major and none of which I’m very familiar with, or just 5 classes and one in the summer?
