I was told to post this here so maybe one of you guys can help me out.

Hi CC. I got into my dream school at Berkeley and found out today that I wouldn't be able to get my full IGETC certification.

The IGETC requires students to take a physical/biological science class with a lab and one without. My problem is I took two physical/biological science classes without a lab and my community college can only certify me for a partial IGETC certification because of it. It explicitly states in my terms of admissions that partial IGETC certification is not accepted at Berkeley and that courses can't be taken during the summer to fulfill the IGETC requirement.

I'm waiting to hear back from my admissions officer at Berkeley but I'm awfully nervous. This happened because of my own negligence and I have no one to blame but myself. I'd be devastated if I'm unable to attend.

I guess I'd like to know what you usually happens in situations like these. Thanks for your time and attention.

@kleesta , how was this overlooked during the UC application filing? When we file the application we list all courses we have taken and it tells us if we are missing anything for igetc on the application.

@JewBacca I think it’s because it doesn’t specify that a class had to have a lab course or not. I took a Geography and an Anthropology class and labeled them as the 2 science class requirements on myberkeleyapp before I was accepted. It was as simple as that.

It actually did specify to include two sciences (a biological and physical one) with at least ONE lab. I’m actually curious how this was overlooked also unless you misleadingly wrote that you had completed a science class with a lab.

@ocnative I didn’t misleadingly write anything that indicated that I took a class with a lab because I didn’t know that that was required at the time. At the same time, it’s possible that I overlooked the part about the lab and I just put in the two science classes that I thought met the requirement.

I only found out today what a headache this would cause when my Community College admissions office called me to tell me that I’d only be eligible for partial IGETC certification.

If you truly did fill everything out correctly, including the individual Berkeley application, you might have a chance. I would REALLY try hard to find a short term class that would still be considered a spring course for a lab.

@kleesta what lab (anthro, bio, etc) were you missing- I can try and help you. Maybe there is an online course your community college will accept credit for.

@Jewbacca The spring semester at my Community College has been over for almost 3 weeks now. Thanks for your words of encouragement. I’m hoping for the best and expecting the worst.

@Jewbacca I think I pretty much needed to take any biological or physical science that has a lab. The IGETC certification needs to be postmarked by July 1st so I don’t think they’ll let me take a class over the summer unless they give me permission to. :(

@kleesta , please read what I wrote again. I am asking what course you need to complete-specifically. I can look up if any other institution is offering it online for self paced learning. If I can find one that is accredited and still in the spring semester, your community college may accept it for certification.

BYU is still on the spring semester and they offer a self paced human anatomy course that includes a lab. Their spring semester ends in two weeks exactly. You would need to complete all the course work and take two proctored exams. I know that community colleges accept BYU online courses, because mine did. How bad do you want it? Are you willing to study day and night for the next two weeks to go to your dream school? Decide.

@Jewbacca Courses that I can complete specifically to fulfill my requirements are any one of the following: Chemistry 1A, 1B, 4, Geography 6, Geology 3, 4, Anthropology 5, Oceanography 10.

I’m unable to provide the actual title of the course/class at the moment because my school’s servers are down…

IIRC, the Berkeley application update required you to list a physical or biological course with a lab. I’m not sure how you got by if you answered it truthfully.

I just looked it up and my community college course offers a human anatomy class with a lab (for the IGETC science lab requirement). If you get certified here and you can complete the course in two weeks you will be good. I wouldn’t HESITATE to spend two weeks day and night to complete that course in two weeks. If you are truly interested, I will call my cc tomorrow and ask if they would accept that course.

I agree with JewBacca, I wouldn’t risk anything and at this point, if Cal rescinds your admission then you are going to have to wait another year to any other college since the June 1st deadline to SIR has passed. You are risking a lot if you don’t take this class.

When did your semester start JewBacca? I hate to say it but I don’t think any JC is going to allow someone to join a lecture and lab at this point in the year. Making up labs seems unlikely.
