Hello, I am a math major at the University of Michigan and I am currently taking an intro to c++ programming however the class is based off total points and with the points I have lost the best grade I can get is a B but the way things are going I anticipate that I will drop to a C if not lower because I simply do not know how to do the projects assigned and I am just not interested in the class. So I would just like everyone's opinion: would a W be better than a C or a possible D? esp if I will take other programming courses at a school close to my home over summer showing I can have competency just not this semester. I would like to know how this would affect my chances at math grad school. Thank you for your time.

yes, a w would be better than a c

at least a W does not pull your overall GPA down - for one C you receive, you'll need at least 3 A's to keep you GPA above 3.0

a C indicates right off that you did not do well in class - you tried to the very end and scored lower than most other studetns - while with W who knows what went wrong and at which time during semester you decided to pull out - may be you did not like the professor ... may be you got sick and your prof did not let you make up your midterm ... it definitely does not bear the same negative connotation as a C does

I have one W on my transcript, and it's not been an issue for grad admissions.

Just my experience.

dude... i'm in the exact same situation. i'm taking an intro to programming class and i just don't like it and i have so much trouble trying to understand and complete the assignments. i just can't perform or grasp the concept of loops even though i read the chapter.

but my problem is that i'm a high school senior and i'm thinking about dropping the class and replacing it with another class (possibly linear algebra). does anybody know if this is a good idea, or will i get rescinded from colleges if they see a W on my transcript?

W is better than a C or D.

I agree that W is better, especially if you plan on making it up later.

i had to take an awful course last semester but since it was a gen ed and had nothing to do with my major anyway, i just went with it and tried hard not to fail....I ended up getting a C in the class, which stunk, but had I withdrew, since it was a gen ed, I would have had to take another course ot make up for it anyway and I did NOT wanna do that.

If it was just some elective though, I would have just opted for a W....that class was killer.
