possible way to get in-state tuition?

I have been reading many different scenarios about how to get in-state tuition for someone that is from a different state. So here is my scenario: I have lived in California my whole life, but I really want to go to the University of Washington. Out-of-state tuition is ridiculous. My dad has lived in Washington for about 5 years now and I was wondering if him living in Washington would qualify me for In-State Tuiton since he lives there and pays taxes. So what do you think?

Check with the University of Washington. This does work for some states, but not for others.

The general policy for the UW is described at [UW Residency - Establishing A Bona Fide Domicile](<a href=“Residency Requirements (Non-affidavit) - Office of the University Registrar”>Residency Requirements (Non-affidavit) - Office of the University Registrar) and other specific situations are listed there too. From what I see, your dad has to provide financial support and you have to get a WA driver’s license, voter registration, bank account, and car registration (if applicable) and then you might have to live in WA for 12 months after all this is done. It’s a lot of work, but I know that there are a lot of Californians at the Udub and many of them have probably attempted this.

If your dad is a WA resident, you may not need to do anything. From the info they provided to college board, it sounds like dependent students qualify based on residency of a parent. Email the admissions/residency officer at the bottom of the link to confirm this is still the case.

“Dependent students receive resident status if one or both of their parents or legal guardians maintain domicile in the state for one year prior to the term of enrollment. This regulation applies regardless of the age of the student, for domicile is determined by financial dependency, rather than by the age of majority.”
