Ok, I know "the only dumb question is the one you don't ask" however I still think I am missing something.

Here the the situation:

I am currently AD military stationed in Germany and am looking to reapply to the University of West Florida (UWF) but I never finished my final year of spanish. I withdrew from the class because I was afraid I was going to fail (C's and D's) and I knew I was going to enlist and wanted to double up on JROTC. This leaves me without the 2 year foreign language requirement required by this state university.I sent a email to them about a week ago and never received an answer; presumably since it is basically summer vacation.

I am working on my final general education credits for my associates degree (electronic systems technology) through the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). I want to start a completely separate IT bachelors degree by actually attending the brick and mortar UWF campus.

Here is what i need to know:

How can I make up my foreign language requirement? Do I have to take another 2 years of X language again?

If I apply online to take some online general education classes, will I have to have the foreign language requirement completed?

Am I Florida state resident for tuition? I use to live with my parents and went to high school there. I have Florida drivers license and claim Florida for taxation. I do not, however, have a physical residence there.

Also, I signed up awhile ago for the Montgomery GI Bill, soon to be transferred to the post 9/11 GI bill. How will the GI bill work with Florida bight futures scholarship (75% one)?

Many colleges don’t have a foreign language requirement. Check the admissions requirements for individual colleges that interest you.

When it comes to residency, also check the policies of the public colleges that interest you. They always are posted on their web sites.

For Bright Futures questions, check the Bright Futures websites.

For the kind of specific questions you’re seeking answers to, look at websites of the organizations in charge of the policies. If you don’t find the info you need, e-mail the organizations directly. Don’t rely on websites like this for answers to the kind of specific questions you have.

Congratulations to you for your service to our country and your determination to further your education.

My advice when applying to a college is to assume that you are dealing with reasonable people. You are an applicant that they should be bending over backward to get! You have maturity and discipline by virtue of your last few years experiences. You have drive or you wouldn’t even be applying. And you have already shown your academic potential by completing coursework while in the service. So, assume the worst they will do is require you to take a language class once you enroll. Who knows, maybe they will just waive it.

Good luck with the adcoms, it can’t be any harder than the Air Force, can it?

I just saw your post and wanted to let you know that since you will have an Associates degree, UWF can admit you without the second year of foreign language and you would just need to take either Spanish 2 at UWF or you could take Spanish 1 and then Spanish 2 if you think you would need a refresher. Hope this helps ease your concerns, if you have any questions, please feel free to call the UWF Office of Admissions at 1-800-263-1074 or email us at admissions@uwf.edu. Best of luck!
