possibly not enough postage?--mailing recommendations help

Is there anyway to check/know w/o asking the college directly if they received a recommendation? because i only put on one stamp for a 9x12 envelope--that only contained 1-2 sheets of paper, which is what my dad told me, but i've also heard that 9x12 envelopes need 3 stamps automatically?
does anyone know for ssure

For UNC (which I'm assuming you're applying to), you can check on your UNC page for when it has been received.

Other than that, you can take the direct approach by calling/email the admissions office and ask.
Or you can send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the letter for them to let you know they received it (my school does this with transcripts).

It is based on size as well as weight now. The best way to figure out the correct amount is from here:
USPS Postage Rate Calculator
9X12 does need more than .41.
Can you check you application status online? Usually that indicates if they are missing something.

When I went to the post office, they said I needed 97 cents. They said it didn't matter it was only one or two sheets or paper inside, but because the size was 9x12, it cost more. =/

Definitely contact your colleges immediately. Even if they have an online notification system, it sometimes takes a while for documents to be entered into the system, so it's best to talk directly with them to make sure. There's nothing wrong with e-mailing or calling to ask if your application materials have arrived - lots of people do it, and they won't fault you for it in any way. If they didn't arrive, you'll need to arrange for them to be resent ASAP, before your winter break begins.

thanks a lot for the help.

A 9x12 envelope DOES require 97 cents regardless of weight. Just get a duplicate sent. It's better than waiting for it to be ret'd.

When DD sent her 9X12 envelope with one letter(blank piece of paper) and one post card, it was 80c. The post office worker weighted and told DD.

Everyone I asked said 97 cents. =/

I was at the post office so this is not second hand information. All her 9x12 got to Stanford and we're from CA. I don't think it makes a difference to CA or NJ. It's the same rate.

I gave my teachers my Stanford and Columbia recs with two 41 cent stamps... They'd better get there...

we always put on an extra stamps for the extra buck or two, its worth the piece of mind

why are people so weird about an extra 41cents when they spend so much on coffee

According to the USPS calculator someone provided, a 1 oz. 9X12 envelope sent from WA to CA would require $.80 to mail. Same envelope weighing 1.5 oz. would need $.97.

Slap on three stamps for your peace of mind!

I sent in my mail to Stanford too. From Texas. It cost me 97 cents.

Do most colleges require 9x11 envelopes? I'm having trouble finding this information online, so I just used the regular looking business ones.

The only one that I'm only aware of is Stanford. It requires special label and special envelope(9X12). The rest DD used 6X9 envelopes.

Special label? I just typed the admissions office address onto several labels and stuck them on the envelopes...

Our school requires that you put four stamps on every (9X12) envelope.

Yes, most schools require 9x12 because they don't want the papers folded.
