Hello,

I'm not sure if I can fill out the FAFSA and CSS today; we have not yet completed 2013 tax returns. I have my dad's pay stubs and all financial information on hand, can I fill it out today? Additionally, if I were to fill out the FAFSA today, can I also send the CSS at the same time? Thanks for any help in advance!

It would be very helpful if your dad could fill out the FAFSA or at least help you with it. You will see that when you fill it out, you will be asked if your dad ‘has filed’ or ‘will file’ his taxes. You can fill in the FAFSA now with estimates and submit again with updates when he files (and before the deadline which is often before April 15 for fr).

Yes, you can submit the Profile now, it is much more detailed than the FAFSA, so again, ask your dad for help.

Thanks–so everything is an estimate until the tax returns are filed?

I have the CSS I filled out in November for applying early action; this will be an estimate as well then?

If you can report the numbers he will use on his tax return, that’s great, but many people cannot because some financial information may not come until late Feb (although with web access, you can often see capital gains, interest, etc. earlier these days). The most important thing is to file by the deadline (which varies by school); if you need to use estimates to do so, that’s fine, and you just have to send in ‘has filed’ corrections later.

Numbers from Nov are almost always estimates. With the Profile, you can’t submit a correction online like you can with FAFSA, so you need to look at the websites of your schools to see how they want corrections sent, they often request hardcopies with the changes marked.
