Possibly transferring from Art Center...

Hey guys, posted here almost 2 years ago (I was in a crisis on whether I should go to Art Center or OTIS). Right now I'm currently attending Art Center (as illustration/motion graphics track). Overall, I really do enjoy/value my education at Art Center. But I'm starting to consider transferring to another school for multiple reasons...

a) switch to a more affordable art school (my parents are financially supporting me, but I'm preventing them from retiring)
b) switch to a school in SF or NYC (if a decent scholarship will be offered. Although I enjoy Art Center, I wish I applied to schools in these locations earlier)
c) switch to fashion design (honestly, I've been considering switching majors into fashion for the past year, I think my aesthetic and understanding of the fashion industry is up-to-bar, more-so than illustration even and I plan on taking some construction classes)

My target/possible transfer schools are...
- SFAI (SF)
- CCA (SF)
- Pratt (NYC)
- SVA (NYC)
- FIT (NYC)
- Parsons (NYC)

I know that if I transfer as Fashion, I will most likely have to start from the beginning. Otherwise, I'll most likely keep my illustration major (or possibly switch to Motion/Graphic design if it's offered). But would you say it's even worth transferring if I'm half way done with my Art Center education?

Thank you

If money is one of your major concerns, I don’t understand how transferring to a school like Pratt or Parsons (where tuition and fees are even higher than at Art Center) would improve your situation. And unless your parents live in NYC so you could save on room & board, your living expenses would no doubt go up there because NYC is an extremely expensive place to live. And if you do indeed “have to start from the beginning” and would be asking your parents to support you for an extra two years, then you need to reduce costs, not increase them.

If you need to change schools, you should probably focus on lower cost ones. But from your posting, it sounds like you really don’t know what you want to do yet. Take some time and really think about your goals. Do you want a career in illustration, graphic design, fashion, something else? Once you’ve figured it out, you can come up with a specific game plan to achieve those goals.

Since you have second thoughts, would you have chosen Otis if you could have?

I second worried_mom. Some of the schools you mentioned are not “low-cost” art schools. I’m too considering to transfer to Art Center (Advertising major) from CCC. I know they have great programs, but the price tag with it will be a problem for me.

I’m curious on why you want to move to SF. Art Center is like 30 mins from LA. Why not move to LA for fashion design? Or perhaps find internship in fashion to see if you really want it? I bet there’s a great school for fashion too in LA.

Another option maybe SCAD in Atlanta? I’m considering that for transfer. And they cost cheaper than Art Center.

Look at the dates, people; this thread is over 2 years old! The OP is long gone – hasn’t posted on CC since 2009. So why is this being resurrected?

hey mom
it seems few new kids want to know about Otis/Art Center and must have searched forum using that as keywords?
you should be happy your cough cough, legend will thus lives on…
like, how did you know your old post was up?

keep lurking around!!

you’re right, bears and dogs.

I did look up from keywords and wanted to see how these people have been doing since its been over 3 years.

I did check the dates thank you very much, worried_mom.
