I'm a student at Columbia right now, and I'm not enjoying it so much. I'm considering transferring, but I just received my grades, and I don't think I performed as well as I could have... I have a pretty strong high school record (good grades, good ECs, good SAT, etc), but I'm disappointed with my first semester GPA (3.2), and I definitely feel that I could have applied myself better. If I did end up transferring, what kind of schools would I have a shot at? Would it be more worth it to stick it out at Columbia, if I would be transferring to a much "lower tier" school because of my grades?

well im sure you have a great hs record if you got into columbia

but if you apply out with a 3.2, you will likely have to apply to a somewhat less competitive school...xfer schools tend to not weigh the prestige of your current school as much as many people think..for example, a generic applicant receiving a 3.8 from a cc will be a more competitive applicant than a generic applicant with a 3.2 at an ivy...i havent heard about many people in your situation, im interested what other people may think on your chances for a school like nyu cas? your college gpa is well below the average accepted rate for nyu cas, i havent heard of anybody transferring to nyu cas with a 3.2, but im sure your hs record is exceptional...so ill just throw out as a potential yardstick that to somebody with more knowledge of people in your situation than i do

but if you are concerned primarily with the prestige of your school, im not sure if a school like lehigh or george washington would be alright with you...if not, i might just stay at columbia...your at a great school in the best city in the world although im sure you have your reasons for wanting out...

gl

Does anyone know how my chances would be at a school I got into last year but turned down? Would that change anything? (or a school I was waitlisted at)

I believe you should stick it out at College. I made the mistake of transferring and it hurt me, or at least I believe it has. Only time will tell. Anyways, Columbia is academically and intellectually challenging. I am sure you coudl convey that on your college applications, the schools will obviously be aware of Columbia's difficulty. Your h.s. record should show your are an academically superior student. I think you will have a great chance at the colleges of your choice. Hwoever, I agree with the above post. Can you stick it out one mroe semester at Columbia?

well what college are you talking about?

This is very interesting. I'm a Dartmouth student, and I'm actually trying to transfer into Columbia. I know a guy who transferred to Dartmouth from Columbia, but didn't really have any negative experiences with the school. I'm curious about your situation - what is it that's wrong with your current school?
