Change essay April 1, 06

While having firm beliefs and fixed values is a nessecary part of being a decent human being, one must be flexible in the changing of ones ideas, opinions, or behaviors. The white Southerns of the antebellum time period did have to change thier moral beliefs on slavery after the civil war. People need to keep up with the times, especially when new technology occurs. Innovation in creating a new and better way to approach things makes life more efficent.
One must realize that ones own beliefs viewed as decent in one time period, can be utterly offensive as time progresses. The main reason for the Civil War was that the South wanted to break away from the North of the United States. This was because feared Northerners would outlaw slavery. We can see today that slavery of any human, regardless of race, is morally wrong. Think about the black people in History and the present that we admire that would not have any freedom if the US had not abolished slavery. It was a nessecary change for the betterment of Society.
Technology advances can cause everyone to change for the better. Fifty years ago, there were essentially no computer in the United States, or anywhere. Once computers were fully developed in the 1990s,the United States economy grew at rapid rates of low unemployment and inflation. The computer changed the way people do business, now being able to send a message or document instantly via E-mail. The internet became an information superhighway, so now anything anyone would ever want to know about the world could be easily access. As a whole this technology made Society more effcient.
Changes in the way people perform certain activites lead to better production. In the early 1950s, football kickers would always kick the ball straight on. Later a soccer player noticed that this technique was inefficient, because if kickers ran to the ball on an angle, it would go futher. This revolutionized the game and made the kicker a much more valuable position. If this change did not occurs, teams would have to work much harder to drive the ball upfield to create scoring oppurtunities.
Change is a good thing. Reforms are always needed to make Society a better, more effiecient place. Moral changes can eliminate discrimination and create more oppurtunites for more people. Inventions, such as the computer, can revolutionize the World, creating better information and thus better business. Innovation, like the soccer style football kicking technique, can make everyone's life easier and better. People should not fight change but embrace change. Life is improved because of it!

Here is my 12 essay from June.

Prompt:

We measure our progress as a civilization by what we see as advances in technology, which seem more significant than such concerns as education and the condition of the natural world. Still, I would prefer to be a part of a community that judged itself on the happiness of its members rather than on the development of new technology.

Adapted from Thomas Moore, The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life

Assignment: Does a strong commitment to technological progress cause a society to neglect other values, such as education and the protection of the environment? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

ESSAY:

As observed by Thomas Moore, the human civilization is fascinated with the secrets of Earth that have yet to be discovered by mankind. Human limitations inhibit humans from learning every piece of information that is imbedded in the Earth and its history. Our gradual solution to these limitations is the progress of technology - developing new apparatuses to utilize in our search to understand our world better. Learning gives humans new paths to take in enriching the human life to be a more enjoyable experience. However, in recent times, this could not be the case. Although technology, from a superficial outlook, seems to be improving life, it is in reality a problem because it is neglecting other important values of the world and is thus making the human race's future more vulnerable.
In the 1800's, technology was a neophyte slowly creeping into the conscience of the average person. As people were busy being impressed by inventions such as the light bulb and the automobile, more and more people decided to dedicate themselves to creating new products, whether it was for a philantrophic cause or a thirst for wealth. However, as materialism invaded American in the 1920's, people took the latter route and started inventing for the possibility of great wealth. The purpose of technology, originally as an attempt to uncover the secrets of our world, has been discarded by the hostile force of human avarice. For example, America started flowing along these lines and is still dominated by this capitalist ideal to this day. Our commitment to technology has taken us along the wrong path in growth and has caused us to neglect values such as the protection of the environment.
One glaring example is water sewage and plumbing. People originally embraced this technology because it is obvious that cleaning an outhouse is not as appealing as simply flushing the toilet and letting the wastes flow away. The process of using the restrooms is easier and more hygienic, thus improving life. Or is it? The problem with this seemingly perfect process is how people deal is how people deal with the wastes. Many companies simply dump the wastes into rivers, lakes, and ponds. For example, the meaning of the Ohio River is "beautiful river", as properly named by the Native Americans a few hundred years ago. However, now the Ohio River is a dump for sewage and waste to empty into. With water sewage and plumbing, humans have embraced technology but essentially ignored the environment. When I now walk up to the Ohio River, I simply think, "How is this a 'beautiful river' when feces are floating on the river a few feet away from me?"
