post-acceptance visit (NOT Dimensions) questions

Contrary to my post count, I’m not quite a new member… I used to post (occasionally) under a different username, but the password was lost and, as the account was attached to a defunct e-mail address, the account therefore became defunct as well. I was accepted ED, so I kind of drifted away from the boards as I became preoccupied with matters beyond college admissions.

Anyway, I’m going to be visiting campus next month, and have a few questions.

Most importantly, is there any way to do an overnight stay with a current student outside of arranging one with the admissions office (as they only arrange overnights in the fall months)? I’d really like to do one, but I don’t know any current students and I don’t want to seem too intrusive.

I’m interested in East Wheelock (well, kind of sort of off and on) and I was wondering what was the best way to… I don’t know… talk to someone about it? Would it be wise to contact someone in the office of residential life, or find a student to talk to?

Anything else reccomended that I do while on my visit? We have nearly two days there, and I am sitting in on two classes (and going on another campus tour), but that still leaves me with quite a bit of free time. I’d like to talk to some students as well, but would like to do so without having to wear my prefroshness on my sleeve, if you get what I’m saying. Contrary to my abundance of questions, I do have a clue as to what’s going on. ;)

Thanks a mil!

if you know a current student ask if they can host you then you are free to make your own arrangements. In addition, ask your friend if they know anyone who lives in EW that can show you around and answer your questions.

Although I dont live in EW, i know a lot of people who do, and i can probably answer most of your questions...

As for looking for things to do on your visit...theres always things going on on campus. Usually we just get blitzes (emails) like the day of or the day before about the different things that are going on. If you want, feel free to PM me with whatever day youll be there and ill keep a lookout for whats going on that day to give you some ideas of what to do.

I also was accepted ED and am planning on visiting the campus sometime soon.
How do you arrange to sit for classes?

Iggyb,

Do you plan on attending Dimensions? If yes, contact the admissions office. While you will be responsible for getting your self there and finding a host (which it sounds like you were going to do anyway), you will still be part of everything else that is going on including the opportunity to sit in on classes (maybe your host will take you to theirs).

Any whoo...

If link does not work

go to the registrars link on Dartmouth site:

click courses

time table of courses

then do a search based on what you want; distribution requirements or gen ed courses.

http://oracle-www.dartmouth.edu/dart/groucho/timetable.main

look up classes that you are interested in and then send an e-mail to the professor asking to sit in.

I'm actually not planning on going to Dimensions. My parents wanted to rent a hotel in the area for one or two days, possibly during this vacation. Is it possible to sit for classes if I'm visiting sometime other than Dimensions? If so, would I just have to get in contact with a professor? Thanks

iggy:

You can also stop by reception room @ the Office of Admissions. They have a list of ongoing classes (times and rooms) in which a professor will accept visitors. Best days to visit on Mondays and Wednesdays since that's when most classes occur.

Sybbie, do you happen to know if there is a bus that is going from NYC to Dimensions? You seem to be so knowledgeable and definitely a mom to put on my buddy list. It would be nice if the ED kids can hop onto the bus as well joining the other kids from the area.
I know they have to make their own arragements when it comes to staying with a current student. But I have heard that ED kids are welcomed to join in all the activities and Dartmouth would even "feed" them like the RD attendees.

If we cannot attend Dimensions, can we be hosted for a day or two sometime before or after the admitted students program?

Yes, there will be buses from NYC that will be going to dimensions. It will probably be located around the Penn Station vicinity (as students from NY, NJ and CT) take the bus. This way it is centrally located to NJ and LI trains and one could take the cross town shuttle from metro north.

That part is true. here is the dimensions link and photos from last year

As far as ED kids hopping on the bus, that will definitely be a question that you will have to ask admissions. Unless there is a new person, Cheryl Sprang handles all of the dimensions stuff. either way, when you call admissions they will direct you.

As far as being hosted outside of the dimension dates, contact the admissions office to see what they can do for you. The weekend following dimensions may not be good because it is first family weekend (when parents and family members of the 10's come to visit) and there may not be any availability.

Almost all professors welcome you to visit their class anytime...not just during Dimensions
