I recently had an alum interview for Harvard. The more I think about it, the more I realize that I didn’t do well. I’ve spent a lot of time reading discussions and it seems like H does weight the interview heavily. I’m not sure if I’ll get a great personal rating. I was going to write my interviewer a thank you email (she had great stories about her time at Harvard and great advice); do you think I should attach my resume? She did say to email her if anything came up, or if there is something else I wanted to say. At the same time, I don’t want to be over the top or unnecessary, ya know?
Sorry you didn’t feel your interview went well.
Sending a handwritten thank you note is always better than sending an email, provided you know the interviewer’s address. I highly doubt your resume will change whatever opinion the interviewer has of you, but if it makes you feel better, send your resume along with the thank you note.
FWIW: Harvard doesn’t openly publish guidelines for alumni interviewers, but Yale does. I imagine Harvard interviewers receive the same kind of rubric and sample reports: http://asc.yale.edu/samplereports.
Pay special attention to the interview reports for Jerod, Richard and Theresa. Do you think a resume sent with a thank you note would have changed the opinion of the interviewers?
Thanks for the reply and the sample reports, which were very helpful. After giving it some thought, I don’t think I’ll send the resume- what happened, happened. At least now I’ll have a bit of experience with interviews for the next university.
