I’m currently a 1st semester senior at Northeastern University majoring in marketing. I’ve discovered that I’m pretty miserable as a business major. I was wondering if getting a post bacc in design would be possible? Or if I’m better off finishing school and getting a masters?
My current major is a BS so switching to a degree in the arts minus the prerequisites may not be possible. Just wondering what makes sense? Would I have to take the pre req’s at a community college and transfer in?
And for design, you may not need a masters. There are certification programs which will do the trick. A masters program can be for those who already did work in that field. Lots of ways to pursue design.
I would get your bachelors. What kind of design are you talking about? Graphic design, industrial design, interior design? I’m leery when you say just general “design” because it makes me feel like you don’t have a solid grasp on what’s required for this degree.
Assuming it’s a graphic art degree, the core stuff is fairly similar, but your upper level classes are entirely different (says someone who quit her last semester of a bachelor’s degree in english lit 20 years ago and is now in her last semester as a studio art major (and not quitting!)) You’d be setting yourself back at least a year and a half, and NEU is not a cheap school to do this at. In many cases you have to pass a portfolio review in order to get into the higher level art/design classes. With no portfolio, you’re starting from scratch at drawing 1.
Really, if you love graphic design and want to be a graphic artist, what the companies want to see is how fast are you with the adobe creative suite, and how good your portfolio is. That’s it. The kids that are meh artists but insanely fast with the hotkeys and shortcuts in adobe are the ones who are working.
A degree in marketing and some mad skills in adobe should get you there.
