Yeah, I don't quite understand what this is, but hey, pretty sweet! I read on this one website that only 30 kids each year get this. Any of you out there? I guess we'll be seeing each other soon.

Hey, I'm a John Jay Scholar. I'm eager to hear more about it...

I'm a C. Prescott Davis Scholar. (whatever that is...)

Kluge Scholar... is there a Scholars' reception during orientation? I could've sworn I read something about it...

Kluge Scholar too...what does this entail? LOL---I kinda thought it was just meant to make us feel special (ignorant me, I know). Do you know what it really means?

ncali, from what I've gathered on the site we would essentially be nurtured by Columbia alums and professional figures with special internship opportunities, networking dinners, cultural trips, seminars, etc. I didn't even notice the letter about it until like 3 hours after I opened up the package, lol. It sounds like an amazing program, as does the Scholars program in general.

Yeah, I got John Jay as well. Seems pretty darn awesome!

I know Kluge Scholars have special receptions and dinners...information on certain internships/lectures and stuff...

Kluge scholars are specifically minorities while JJ scholars are like the most accomplished Columbians on campus. Either way, each is pretty sweet

My best friend got John Jay Scholar status, as well as Rabi Scholar.

Congrats to all. These honors mean that the admissions people thought very highly of you. Most importantly, it is something nice to put on your resume, especially when you're a fresh/soph and have little else.

But, they aren't a huge deal. There's no money attached to it. A lot of it is marketing/recruiting (the best people may be more likely to accept Columbia if they feel special). In the long run, you'll be judged by, and have opportunities based on, how you perform while you're at Columbia rather than your high school accomplishments. The "perks" are so very minor because Columbia doesn't want to alienate the rest of the student body and tell everyone else that they're second-class citizens.

The Kluge scholars program gives out really huge scholarships, actually. I'm classified as an international, and all of my fin aid came from that fund.

money wise, as far as i know getting made a scholar = the loan portion of your financial aid is given as a grant instead.

i got made a global scholar ed anyway

Yes, I am also a John Jay Scholar, and to my knowledge all of my fin aid was from the fund as well.
BUt how prestigious is it? Is it true that only 30 are chosen?

I found this website with more information about the program itself:
http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/scholars/index.php
In addition to John Jay and Kluge Scholars, C.P. Davis Scholars are from SEAS, and Global Scholars are international students.

richard and candize,
what are your stats???

i'm a rabi scholar. what is a john jay scholar?

Dostoevsky, my stats are in the RD Decisions thread, page 4.

desi, go to that site I posted for more information about other scholar dignifications. Rabi Scholar is not on that website, so I have no idea about it.

It gives you some special events with speakers, some free food, chances for free tickets to Broadway shows etc. a few times a semester, and opportunities for dinner with alumni in various fields. You'll meet other John Jay scholars at these events.

Beyond that, it's not clear where the John Jay Scholar program is going. I think the original notion of John Jay Scholars was that these students were likely candidates to apply for prestigious scholarships later. The woman who heads the scholars office was also in charge of prepping students for those competitions. But the university has recently hired someone separate from the scholars office, whose sole job it is to encourage and advise more Columbia students to compete for things like the Rhodes, Truman, and other awards.

Mostly, it's recognition that you were in the top of the applicant pool to Columbia College. Congrats.

I'm a John Jay scholar apparently. John Jay seemed like he was a cool dude, so I'm pumped. That being said, I had no idea what it meant (like the others here). I guess I figured it was something like what sac and others are saying

I'm a C Prescott Davis Scholar. My dad is making a huge deal out of this, but I'm not sure what to think.

haha I know what you mean, parents eat this sort of stuff up
