Post Katrina

University of Georgia is accepting displaced students, with a priority to Georgia residents previously admitted. But they are also willing to help others. Check out these links. One thing though, classes have been in session for two weeks already.

S may be doing that...after spending time on the phone today with Financial Aid, Housing, and the head of "Instruction", I'm pleased to say they are being very accomodating. However, I have heard no mention of any free tuition (although many students get the HOPE scholarship which makes it free). Additionally, Financial Aid said that while he was not aware of any waivers for tuition, room or board, he did say he knew that they are being very flexible about timing of payments.

As you know, many of our students have been displaced by the horrid effects of Hurricane Katrina. Oklahoma City University is here to help. We have been enrolling many Tulane students today and are happy to help all by providing a semester of FREE tuition.

Oklahoma City University President Tom McDaniel announced Thursday, September 1st 2005, that Oklahoma City University will open it's arms to those students effected by this situation. This includes students who attended schools that have been effected by the damage of Hurricane Katrina.

Oklahoma City University will award one semester of full, free tuition to students for the Fall 2005 semester. Books, housing and incidental fees are not covered.

"We are opening our hearts and our university to these students", McDaniel stated. "Although we can not replace lost lives or undo damage, the OCU community is eager to help. In fact, it is part of our mission of Oklahoma City University. We don't want this natural disaster to be a road block in these students' educational path."

For over 100 years, Oklahoma City University has had a history of service and academic success. With numerous undergraduate and graduate degrees, we hope to lend a hand to those in need.

Students may apply on-line here: <a href="http://www.tgimatocu.com/apply/%5B/url%5D">http://www.tgimatocu.com/apply/</a>
OCU will waive the normal $30 application fee till this Tuesday, September 5th. The fee is ONLY waived for those students effected by the hurricane. Applications are being accepted now.

Hamilton College joins other colleges in helping the gulf coast students:

Dear Members of the Hamilton Community,

The following press release is being issued regarding Hurricane Katrina. I am proud of our community's response and grateful to those involved in assisting the victims of this terrible disaster.

Sincerely yours,

In response to the devastation suffered by the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Hamilton College is eager to assist its Central New York student neighbors. Those students who are within commuting distance of Clinton, NY and who are enrolled in colleges and universities in the Gulf area that have been forced to suspend operation are welcome to take classes for credit at no cost at Hamilton this fall, depending on course availability. Local students who were enrolled or planned to enroll at colleges located in the disaster area are encouraged to contact Hamilton's Office of the Dean of Students immediately at 315-859-4020.

Hamilton's alumni office is also gathering information concerning the welfare of alumni from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama who may have been affected by Katrina. Those with information are asked to contact Jon Hysell at jahysell@hamilton.edu or at 315-859-4606.

Several student groups are planning fundraisers to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In addition, the College is conducting an American Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. In light of possible long-term economic challenges for Gulf Coast residents, Hamilton will give special financial consideration to future students living in the affected area.

My daughter is a first-year at McGill and LOVES it, Montreal is a great city, just like NO. McGill has announced it is accepting Tulane students:

<a href="http://www.mcgill.ca/newswire/?ItemID=16575%5B/url%5D">http://www.mcgill.ca/newswire/?ItemID=16575</a>.</p>

Just info for you. BTW, McGill is not only a world-class school, tuition is 30-35% that of a private school in the US.

Its official. There shall be no fall semester. This is very sad. I am glad, however, that other schools are offering to help.

I am just heartbroken. I will never forget the look of utter delight on dd's face when she opened her acceptance envelope on a dark midwest winter night -- it lit up the whole kitchen.

geena, I'm with you.

S really struggled between Tulane and another school. But once he made up his mind, he has been resolute. He's now attending school #2 but insists he will go back to Tulane.

I'm wondering how many freshmen will come back at all? I'm hoping that many will, but it's much harder for them because they haven't been there long enough to make a connection that will sustain them through this semester.

It is heartbreaking, although expected given the situation in the city as a whole. I must say that I am more impressed with Scott Cowen and his team as things go along. Here we have a situation where the outpouring from other institutions offers a ready temporary solution for the students (and their families). Now he is turning his attention to his employees. To me, this is as it should be. That is something that cannot be solved by the generosity of other universities and I respect greatly his turning his attentions in that direction.

Heartbreaking is the only word for it. I was hoping they could pull it off somehow, but was expecting this. Scott Cowan and the Tulane emergency staff have been extraordinary. I feel for the employees and hope all goes well for them in the coming months. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the spring. Hope springs eternal, as they say. In the meantime, I guess we all have a lot to think about this weekend. Best wishes to all with their decisions.

I too am heartbroken. My son and his TEMS team it seems will have to split up to attend other schools around the country. I am the biggest sports nut around, and I defend to the death the necessity of sports to create identiy for school. So, I understand the care that was taken to make sure that the Tulane sports teams could stay together and compete this Fall.

However, it saddens me that TEMS was not including in those plans. These kids are STILL working their rears off in Baton Rouge caring for the sick and injured, even while I was reading the letter to them that ended any hope of staying together.

I still do not know what my son will do. In all liklihood he will have to come home and take classes here. As a Dean's Honor Scholar, he cannot just "drop" out with risking his scholaship. And without being able to communicate with the administration he will have no chance to continue his work.

I am hoping that someone in the Tulane Administration sees this message and takes into account the value of keeping this "team" together. If not, they will go their separate way, and re-group when called back to campus.

concerneddad - I am aching for you and your S. I understand what Tulane had to do - I believe it was out of their hands to a great extent. Can the TEMS team not continue their semester of service (assuming they want to) without losing their student status and scholarships?

My son is devastated byond words, he keeps saying that this is his 9/11. He's depressed and doesn't know how he is going to get through this. Any help from fellow Tulane parents wouldbe appreciated. My s left his Tulane sweatshirt behind, anybody that can find me a Green Tulane sweatshirt, I would truly appreciate it. His birthday is September 8th and it would surely cheer him up. I am willing to pay dearly for it, especially if the money is donated o one of the charities. My son is also working on a web site called SaveTulane.com, he purchased the domain any help would be appreciated, he can be emailed at CraigJK985@aol.com.

jamismom - It helped my S to have his "forward plan" in place (which will be Bates). I think your S will be at Miami? Is that helping at all? Unfortunately, all of our Tulane clothing is in the dorm. I used to be in retail and we had some sources for college logo shirts. I will see if I can find anything.

jamismom: Tell you son to hang in there. Cancelling the Fall semester was predictable; the options were what we were all waiting for. Now that they are known, it is time to form "Tulane in Exile." All of my son's clothes are in his dorm room, so I have nothing to send except a Tulane apron -- it is yours if you want it. Just PM me.

Jmmom: I don't know about the service and scholarshiop issue, which is why we are seeking input from the school. It is too much money to walk away from, but I have to believe that there is a campus somewhere that could benefit from two ambulances and 20 hard working dedicated kids!!

concerned - I like that term. Perhaps it's time to design a NEW sweatshirt with that logo. Jamismom - would he like that shirt? You can find Screenprinters in the phone book (depending on where you live), show them a green wave logo if you want that on it, or just the block lettering you want, and they can make a custom shirt for you. You've got time, I think, either for the Tulane in Exile shirt or a traditional Tulane one. (I didn't find any of my old resources in a quick look so far).

Here is a link to Tulane merchandise

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/search.html/sr=3-1/qid=1122979359/ref=sr_3_1/002-7424128-7371220?_encoding=UTF8&node=3386071&keywords=tulane&index=sporting&rh=a:3375301,k,a:3386071%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/gp/search.html/sr=3-1/qid=1122979359/ref=sr_3_1/002-7424128-7371220?_encoding=UTF8&node=3386071&keywords=tulane&index=sporting&rh=a:3375301,k,a:3386071</a></p>

I don't understand, CD, how are they losing anything of their scholarships??? How could they NOT be allowed to take this semester to do this service and then pick up where they left off in January? Or am I misunderstanding something? It's impossible for me to believe that Tulane would take away their scholarships for doing this service. I must be misunderstanding (sorry--days of migraine makes me stupid!)

jamismom, tell your son to get himself onto the facebook and keep in touch with the others! They aren't feeling low--they have places to go and my son, at least, is still excited about returning to Tulane when he is allowed to next term. Life is still wonderful for these kids. So many places are doing so much for them! They still have so much! My husband has an XL green Tulane T-shirt. if you can't find anything else, we'll send him that. (I know my husband would like to keep it, but if your son is really feeling bad, he'd give it up in a minute.)

Soon, they'll have TWO colleges to which they can feel grateful. I'm still blown away by the loving care Tulane took of my only child, and now Cornell is going to take him in and treat him better than the institutions in his own state. I've got to find some people to thank! And someday, we all have to get together in New Orleans.

cty: What I meant was that if they took a term off to contiune doing what they are doing without prior approval, those that are on scholarship would technically be in violation of the obligation to be enrolled in the minimum number of units to keep the scholarship. And, without the ability to reach the adminstration, there is no way to get prior approval.

My s isn't sure where he wants to go to school for the semester, although he is being realistic and settling into the idea that most likely it will be for the entire year. He is enrolled at Miami, but we are waiting to hear from Tufts, unfortunately due to the holiday weekend, it makes the waiting longer and Miami has already started school and as of now he has no living arrangements. I feel so sorry for these kids and I only hope that Scott Cowen can give us some idea of what it looks like for the forseeable future.

Janismom, Concerneddad, jmmom and others, I feel your pain - and your kid's pain. My son looked so much brighter and less depressed when we went to SMU to enroll for the fall semester. They treated us like royalty. Not like someone they were forced to take because of public opinion and policy. They genuinely care about helping these kids make the best of a truly awful situation. However, my husband, mom and I took him to lunch after he finished enrollment, and he hardly ate a thing. I think the relief and anticipation of getting back to studies again dissipated very quickly into a sense of finality and grief for the semester that didn't happen. He still hasn't heard from his roommate from last year except that he knows he's ok because he changed the entry in the facebook. He just doesn't know where he is.

SMU is hosting the football and soccer teams and they will attend school there. If the game happens on the 24th, we will still root for Tulane, but with a thankful tone because the folks at there have been so great. This is Texas, and school loyalty is a given. I think the folks at SMU would be disappointed in us if we dropped allegience to our school because of a temporary set back.

I can't complain because my son has his Tulane wear here. It always amazes me how an item we take for granted on a daily basis becomes so important. Jetstream, thanks for the link.
