post-priority date Schreyer applicants

For those who applied to Schreyer after the priority date, have you heard anything yet?

I wouldn’t expect to hear anything until after the deadline to accept an offer of admission.

Has anyone been accepted to Schreyer who applied AFTER the priority date?

Well, I gather by the lack of response that there have been very few, if any, students who applied after the priority deadline and were offered admission.

Although this is Penn State’s game and they can create their own rules, I must say I wish they had posted this information about the application process early on. Had I know this, I would have saved myself the $30 and not applied.

It’s a bit misleading not to post on the application website that all spots may be offered to those who apply by the priority deadline. If you do not apply by the deadline, your chances of admission are very slim.

Let this be a lesson to all of you who are considering Schreyer. If you don’t apply by the priority deadline, don’t waste your time or your money. Move on to another school.

This is what is on the Dean’s blog:

Q: How many of the 300 spaces for first-year incoming students have been filled?

A. Most of the offers (aside from late applications) have been mailed out. Students will make their decisions by May 1st.

(My note: interesting that the Dean doesn’t directly answer the question. Exactly how many offeres were extended?)

Q. Hello! I know that these questions are probably becoming tiring to answer but I was just wondering if it is too late to apply for SHC as an incoming freshman. I understand that the March 1st deadline is late and that there are only 300 spots to fill. Does that mean I have any sort of chance at all? Thanks for your help.

A. Apala – You can submit an application but we are finalizing our offers this week and will send out letters by Friday. Your chances are therefore very slim.

Q. Is there a certain amount of students that will be accepted by SHC? I don’t quite understand the disadvantage to applying past the priority deadline. Even if I am at the end of the queue, my application would still eventually be reviewed with just as much consideration as the previous SHC applications, correct?

A. We only have 300 spaces for incoming first-year students. We have a priority deadline of Nov. 30 and we take all of the applications received by then and review them first. If we fill our spaces from that pool then we are done. If we have room, then we will move on to those applications received after that date.

Wow, someone is bitter. The SHC makes it clear that the priority deadline is the 30th. Since it VERY competitive program drawing thousands of applicants than it shouldn’t be a surprise they will find 300 suitable applicants to accept out of those who apply by the priority deadline.

You can apply for a spot after your freshmen year. If you get in you will have all the same perks as a freshmen scholar minus the scholarships. Not getting into Schreyer and “moving on” to another school tells me that you really did not truly like Penn State as a whole and you would of most likely had a negative first-year experience.

No, not bitter. Very disappointed. The priority deadline, I thought, meant that if you wanted to receive your decision by a certain date, you application should be received by the priority date. I wasn’t the only person to have that impression, as evidenced by the other post indicating that they didn’t see any disadvantage by applying after the date. Penn State was my first choice - only if I were accepted to Schreyer. I wasn’t.

Anyone who digs up this thread, its still possible to get admitted past the priority date. Sure, chances are more slim than if you were to apply by the priority deadline, but do not NOT apply because you think you won’t get in. I was Out of State, didn’t have a 4.0 GPA, and applied past the priority deadline (1 week before the final deadline) and I still got in. What I CAN tell you is that if you’re going to apply past the priority date, you need STRONG teacher reccomendations and essays. I had both of those and I got accepted and am going to attend.

Hi rajoe443. Could you tell me your stats from HS? My daughter is applying to PSU and Schreyers in the fall and was wondering her chances of getting into Schreyers. Thank you.

sgrennan, take a look at the Schreyer Honers College annual report here:
https://www.shc.psu.edu/documents/about/annual-report/annual_report_1213.pdf</a>
It gives you a profile GPA and SAT range of current Schreyer students. While SAT is not considered for admission to honors college, strong SATs seems to correlate strongly with the students they accept. I think those accepted are not only strong students but many give back to their communities through extensive volunteer work. They’re not just looking for a laundry list of H.S. club memberships.
