Post Questions About College Admissions, Prep, Applying, etc. Here

Hello,
I was recently admitted in this past application cycle (Class of 2016) to an Ivy League school and I thought I could help others in the next class who are now starting the application cycle with their questions and concerns.

I have a question about the common app. For the activities, how did you fill out the description part (the bottom line)?

Do you write in complete sentences (i.e. “I dealt with all things pecuniary including membership dues and financial books”) or did you write in fragments (i.e. “Managed financial books; Collected membership dues; Oversaw all things pecuniary”)?

Thank you!

On the actual Common App, I wrote in fragments. For some activities, this was obviously too short a space to give them justice. So what I did was (and I neither recommend nor discourage this because I don’t know what impact it has on already overburdened admissions officers) I wrote “see attached” and attached a few pages explaining some of the more significant activities in a concise manner. I got this idea from “A is for Admission” by Hernandez. The author was a former Dartmouth admissions officer and she suggested the attached sheet to explain significant activities.

I love that book, except I never read the part you mentioned! I’ll have to go back and find it! Thank you so much.

Whups sorry, got that mixed up. It’s “Acing the College Application” by Hernandez. First chapter.

The purpose of College Confidential is to ask and answer these sorts of questions. ptontiger16 is more than welcome to respond to questions on any thread. A consolidated thread by one poster is unnecessary and unwarranted.
