We just attended Discovery Day this past Saturday and enjoyed our visit. Like all college visits we’ve attended there were positives and negatives. We visited many campuses a couple of years ago when our oldest was figuring out where to go and now on round two. UAH is a nice campus that is very well equipped. It differs from many colleges in that there is no historical charm, no old parts of campus, old buildings, tradition. Anyway, my unanswered questions—
It was made clear that after sophomore year on campus housing isn’t really an option, but no info available about where to go from there, what nearby apartment options? Our first was also out of dorms after freshman year but his university has many apartments within the same walking distance to campus as the dorms, for the same price as the dorms. We couldn’t find any info on this?
Is it just a bad idea to go to UAH as an arts major? We were part of a small group of diverse majors on the arts/social sciences tour and the staff seemed unsure what to do with us. They were nice but stumbled around, at one point saying they were “ignored” by administration. With such a STEM focused school is it just a bad idea to purse the arts here?
We’re accustomed to coed dorms but were a bit surprised to be told that one freshman hall had one room of four girls and the rest of the hall was all guys. Is this the norm? Seems like inviting trouble to me.
My son attends UAH – this is his third year. First, housing after the sophomore year is available. You need to sign up early. Second, the school is in the process of adding another housing unit in the next year or so. Third, if your student joins a fraternity/sorority, he or she may have the option of living in the house. My son has done that for two years, and he likes it. So that could be an option, too. That said, my son has friends living off campus in houses about 10 minutes away. Nice neighborhood, too. There are also several apartment complexes in Huntsville.
As for the arts major, your student just may receive lots of individual attention. My son knows several students who are not STEM majors – including him. He is a finance/econ major. He has a guy in his fraternity who is doing elementary education. He also knows others majoring in English and other liberal arts subjects.
If you are concerned about the arts and their role at UAH, why not contact the department and ask some questions? My son, before he committed to attend the school, met with two department chairs to learn about majors and minors. The UAH staff is good about answering questions, so you should ask.
Thanks for your reply. We did speak with a professor in the department and got a lot of good info, was just looking for outside thoughts/opinions on the subject. Glad to hear of more housing options
