Death from above

hey i'm a lil sorry for getting off-topic, but since you guys are rice enrollees, i thought u'd be the best ppl to ask this to: on the Rice Common App Supplement, they have a box and says "Put Something that Interests You" What did you guys put for the boxes? i just need a general idea of what to do

Be unique, use your imagination. Make it... "you."

Hey Samian! I'm a freshman at Rice now and I can clearly remember the sinking feeling I got in my stomach when I saw "the magic box" on the Rice application. Wrprice gave the best advice, but if you wanted a couple of examples of items people placed in the box, I know of two. I put a picture of myself juggling torches and I know of a friend that put a picture of a bowl of rice.... I got in, my friend didn't, so perhaps the attempt at humor didn't go over at the admissions' office as well as he'd hoped. ;-) But don't stress about it...it's on the lower end of the admissions factors I'm sure. Have some fun with it!

My son put a picture of a bowl of rice and he got in.....

lol aww i love you guys! any more examples out there u guyz wanna add???

My daughter used an an origami crane she made representing her year in Japan...she was accepted ID last year.

FYI: The admissions office hates it when people glue real rice to the application -- it unsticks in the mail and falls all over the floor. And as you might imagine, they get a lot of boxes involving rice. I don't recommend it because it's too cliche, but the box doesn't necessarily make or break you.

Like I said, be unique and do something that relates to YOU. The less likely it is that someone else will do the same thing, the better. Remember that you're trying to STAND OUT.

I put a picture of a my golden retriever swimming with a tennis ball in my box, and I got in. However, attending Rice wasn't an option for me due to money. Great school, though, and I thoroughly enjoyed Owl Weekend. The 09's and beyond are going to have a great time.

how can you fit a picture in there, the box is sooo small?!?!! did you make it smaller online and print it out?

I did a picture too. I cut mine a little but I know I went outside of the size of the box. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

is ur "mystery box" in part 2 or in the signature page that u download and mail??

Oh I meant last year I did the app and got in. I believe mine was on the signature page that I downloaded and mailed.

what kinda picture was it?? im clueless

It was a photo of me and a family that I lived with for two weeks in Thailand. We were standing lined up. Wow I miss them so much all of the sudden. It was really important to me and I think that Rice understood what I was trying to show by putting that picture. I think they saw that I was a caring person and I could bring some sort of diversity to the campus (Note: I did write a little blurb under the photo so I don't think they could have got all that just from looking at a photo)

I just did an outline of the state of Alaska and put a few unique things from our state around the edges. I know it wasn't clever or original but I wanted to push the fact that so few people from my state apply to Rice every year. Now I am just waiting for the December 15th rejection letter. Does it get mailed from Rice on the 15th or do people usually have it in their mailboxes by the 15th? I am literally counting the days and am really nervous.
