PSAT 2010 scores just in. My daughter got a 228 and 2160 in SAT (Reading 670, Math 710, Writing 780) but she has 4Bs in her 11th Grade out of 8 courses. She has some community volunteering service experience. Does she stand a chance of becoming a finalist? What does one do to embellish the record to get a national merit scholarship? BTW, how much money is at stake in a national merit scholarship? Is this scholarship over all the 4 years of undergrad? Do big name schools give tuition scholarships to national merit scholars? Does she stand a chance at getting tuition scholarships at big name schools? Any input from parents/kids would be greatly appreciated!!!

ParanoidParent, from what I understand, nearly all semifinalists become finalists. I think it’s something like 15/16ths. I’ve been told that NMSC mostly weeds out kids who have had disciplinary problems or run-ins with the law or whose SAT scores are drastically lower than their PSATs or whose grades are really poor. Your daughter meets none of those negative criteria, so she’ll be fine. I’m no expert, so take it from whence it comes, but I would say that she has an EXCELLENT (even sure-bet) chance of becoming a finalist.

The scholarship thing is complicated, and, again, I’m far from being an expert. From what I understand, NMSC’s scholarship for National Merit Scholars is a one-time award of $2,400. But that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. MANY colleges and corporations also offer National Merit scholarships. Amounts vary, but some colleges actually award automatic full-ride scholarships to National Merit Finalists. (E.g.: Arizona State / Barrett Honors College, Auburn, U of Alabama, U of Oklahoma.)

When your D receives her official packet from NMSC (in September, if it’s in line with what they did last year), it will include a list of all NMF/NMS scholarships. :))

(Actually, I believe the list is online, too…someone posted the link in another thread recently; will have to look for it.)

Best of luck. And congratulations to your D for her stellar stats and accomplishments!

Diane

I heard it’s something like above a 2k on the SAT and above a 3.0 and if you fill out the app you get it

Still haven’t gotten these scores. This *es me off. *.

^Holy ***** same here. We have to go to a PSAT meeting after school on Monday, which is stooopid. Not sure why anyone would need a powerpoint presentation to understand what the score means.

But of course, it may snow on Monday, and Georgia shuts down when it rains heavily. SMH I gotta wait

:/ I don’t even want to talk about it.

^^ Damn.

We get out for an inch of snow.

Argh, we don’t get them until Monday. For some reason they gave them out to sophomores at my school today, but not juniors … the people it actually matters for.
